Title: Punctuation:

1
Punctuation
  • The Key to Communicating Clearly
  • Present by Bill Haining.

2
Aims
  • Be able to define punctuation.
  • Be able to explain the importance of punctuation.
  • Be able to analyze the effect of misusing
    punctuation.

3
Punctuation Definitions
  • punctuation marks are the traffic signals of
language they tell us to slow down, notice this,
take a detour, and stop .

4
Punctuation Definitions
  • punctuation is a courtesy designed to help
readers to understand a story without
    stumbling.

5
Punctuation Definitions
  • As we shall see, the practice of pointing our
writing has always been offered in a spirit of
helpfulness, to underline meaning and prevent
    awkward misunderstandings between writer and
    reader.

6
Punctuations Importance
  • The reason to stand up for punctuation is that
without it there is no reliable way of
    communicating meaning. Punctuation herds words
    together, keeps others apart. Punctuation
directs you how to read, in the way musical
notation directs a musician how to play.

7
The Effect of Misusing Punctuation
  • A woman without her man is nothing.

8
The Effect of Misusing Punctuation
  • A woman, without her, man is nothing.

9
The Effect of Misusing Punctuation
  • A panda walks into a café. He orders a
sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two
shots in the air. Why? asks the confused
waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The
panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual
and tosses it over his shoulder. Im a panda,
he says, at the door. Look it up. The waiter
turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough,
    finds an explanation. Panda. Large
    black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to
    China. Eats, shoots and leaves.
