Title: Plant Classification

1
Plant Classification Anatomy
2
Plants can be classified into 2 main groups
  • Non-Vascular Plants
  • mosses no vascular systems
  • Vascular Plants
  • Gymnosperms complex vascular system bare seed
    (cone)
  • Angiosperm complex vascular system enclosed
    seed within a flower

3
You Tube Clips
  • Attenborough Venus Fly Trap
  • Pitcher Plants

4
Vascular Plants Angiosperms
  • Made of 4 organs
  • 1. Leaf Photosynthesis, produce glucose
  • 2. Stem Supports flower for easy pollination,
    supports leaf to capture sun.
  • 3. Root Absorbs water and minerals from soil
  • Anchors plant
  • 4. Flower For sexual reproduction
  • Male gamete Pollen
  • Female gamete Egg in ovary

5
Two types of Vascular Plants P. 531
  • 1. Monocot
  • - Seed eg. Corn, 1
  • cotyledon (seed leaf)
  • - Stem Vascular
  • bundles scattered in
  • pith
  • - Flower Multiples of 3
  • (trillium)
  • - Leaf Veins run parallel
  • through leaf
  • -Roots Fibrous

6
Two types of Vascular Plants P. 531
  • 2. Dicot
  • - Seed eg. Peanut, 2
  • cotyledons
  • - Stem Vascular
  • bundles in a ring
  • - Flower Multiples of 4 or 5
  • - Leaf Veins are net like
  • - Roots tap root

7
Roots
  • Two types
  • 1. Tap root
  • 2. Fibrous
  • Sketch and label diagram on page 533!

8
Stems
  • Herbaceous green soft, dont survive the
    winter
  • Woody tough hard, survive winter

9

Go LEAVES Go!Leaves in detail!
  • How caterpillars survive on plants (youtube)
  • 1. Use your book to complete the work sheet
    (structures and functions).
  • Giant water lillies (youtube)
  • 2. Colour code leaf diagram.
  • 3. Leaves on Microviewers Activity.

14
Parts of the flower
  • Male reproductive part stamen which are made
    up of
  • filament - stalk
  • anther produces pollen grains
  • Female reproductive part Pistil which is made
    up of
  • style stalk
  • stigma sticky surface at tip of style
  • ovary organ that contain the egg

style
15
Pollination
  1. Pollen grain moves from anther to pistil.
  2. The grain forms a tube and pollen travels down it
to the egg in the ovary. There is a different
    pollen grain for each egg.
  3. Each fertilized egg becomes a seed.
  4. The ovary wall becomes the flesh of the fruit.
