Title: 8th Grade Safety

1
8th Grade Safety
2
General Safety Rules
  • Safety test must be passed before any student is
permitted to use any power machine.
  • Ask instructor to approve all work that you plan
    to do.
  • All injuries should be reported to the instructor
    immediately.
  • Wear suitable eye protection when engaged in any
activity where eye hazards may exist.
  • Wear suitable clothing for wood shop. Roll loose
    sleeves, fasten loose clothing.
  • Cooperate with your classmates in the student
    management program of your shop.
  • Caution any other student you see violating a
    safety rule.
  • Keep tools and materials from projecting over the
    edge of benches whenever possible.
  • Use a brush to clear away chips and a rag to
    clean oily areas.
  • Keep floor clear of scraps and litter.
  • Wipe immediately any liquids spilled on the
    floor.
  • Keep bench and cabinet drawers, and locker doors
    closed.
  • Never attempt to lift heavy objects without
    assistance.

3
Hand Tools
  • Be sure that tools and cutters are sharp--dull
tools must be forced and are hazardous.
  • Be sure your hands are free as possible of dirt,
grease, and oil when using tools.
  • Use proper type and size of hand tool.
  • Make sure the tools you are going to use are
    sharp and in good condition.
  • Handle edges of pointed tools with care.
  • Make sure when using sharp-edged tools to point
the edge away from yourself and your classmates.
  • Clamp small work on bench or secure in vise when
using a gouge or wood chisel.
  • Control chisels, gouges, and carving tools with
one hand while the other hand supplies the power.
  • Pass tools to classmates with the handles first.
  • Clamp small work on bench or secure in vise when
    driving screws.

4
Power Machines
  • No power machine is to be used at any time until
    the instructor has given permission.
  • Use safety appliances and guards.
  • If you remove a guard for a special operation,
always be sure to replace it.
  • Wait until machine has come to a complete stop
    before making any adjustments.

5
Power Machines
  • See that all stock or machine parts are securely
fastened before starting motor or machine.
  • If you are not operating a machine, do not stand
in the painted safety zones around the machine.
  • Never leave a machine until you have stopped it.
  • Remove loose pieces of material, tools, etc.,
from a machine before starting it.

6
Power Machines
  • Machines which are located in the shop should
never be used while the instructor is out of the
    room.
  • Do not crowd or hurry a machine.
  • Make all machine adjustments when machine is at a
    dead stop.

7
Power Machines
  • Give full attention to the machine--do not talk
to anyone or look away. Always use the guards.
  • Do not leave the machine with blade of cutter
exposed--cover them with a guard or lower them
    into the table.
  • Keep hands and face out of line with blades and
    cutters.
  • Stop machinery for measurements.
  • Keep your fingers away from moving parts.

8
Disc Sander
  • Always sand on the down travel of the disc.
  • Be sure abrasive is properly connected to disc
    before turning on machine.
  • Never stand in direct line of travel of disc. It
may come off and cut operator or bystander.
  • Be sure work is held firmly against table.
  • Small stock 1" or 2" in length should not be
sanded on the disc sander. Use disc sander for
sanding outside curves, angles or miters.
  • Do not use the disc sander for sanding long
straight edges which should be smoother on a
    jointer.

9
Belt Sander
  • Hold sander level, keep full surface of the belt
in contact with the wood at all times.
  • Keep all parts of the body and foreign objects
    away from the abrasive surface.
  • The electric cord must be arranged before
    starting, taking into consideration convenience
    and safety.

10
Bandsaw
  • Adjust the guard to about 1/4" above thickness of
    the stock.
  • Plan cuts carefully, layout and make relief
cuts before cutting long or sharp curves so that
there will be minimum of backing out.
  • If the stock binds or pinches the blade, do not
attempt to back out until power has been shut off
    and machine stops.
  • Remove scrap material from saw table with stick
    or brush.
  • Keep floor area surrounding saw clear of scraps.
  • If blade breaks, shut off power and stand clear
    until machine stops completely.

11
Bandsaw (continued)
  • Make all cuts under power--never while the
    machine is coasting.
  • Leave the machine only after power is turned off
    and blade has stopped moving.
  • Never adjust the saw while it is running.
  • Students must not allow their fingers to come
dangerously close to the saw when cutting stock.
Keep fingers at least 3" from saw blade at all
    times.
  • Students must not stand at right-hand side of
band saw machine. A serious accident might
result if the blade should break.
  • Work must have a flat surface to rest on the
table. Use a V block when cutting round stock.

12
Drill Press
  • Insert the drill in the chuck properly and
tighten it securely before starting the drill
    press.
  • Remove the chuck key before power is turned on.
  • Use a base block under work or be sure drill is
over center hole in table when boring completely
    through stock.
  • All work must be securely clamped to table or
held firmly in drill vise or wood hand screw at
    all times.
  • Always ease up on the drill as it is about to go
through the bottom of the stock.
  • Make a center punch mark in which to start the
    drill.
  • When boring to depth use the lock nuts to set to
proper depth or use quill pointer.

13
Compound Miter Box(Chop Saw)
  • In making a cut on the chop saw the stock must be
    held solidly against the fence.
  • The saw should not be forced into the material
any faster than it can cut with ease.
  • The hands should be kept to one side of the
    direction of the saw cut.
  • Only one piece at a time should be cut on the saw
because of the difficulty of securely holding
    more pieces.

14
Chop Saw (continued)
  • The chop saw is used for cutting across the grain
of the stock.. Do not cut with the grain.
  • Be sure the saw teeth are cutting toward the
operator and nut is snug on the blades.
  • For warped or winded stock, have instructor help
    with cutting.
  • Always give the saw blade clearance and let it
reach proper momentum before pulling blade into
    stock being cut.

15
Chop Saw (continued)
  • Never use saw without a properly adjusted safety
    guard.
  • Because there is danger of the hand being drawn
into saw blade, the chop saw should not be used
to cut short lengths of stock-no exceptions!
  • A board must be at least 8 inches long to be cut
    on the chop saw.
  • Your hand can never be closer than 5 inches to
    the blade.

16
Planer
  • The bed of the planer should be adjusted to not
more than 1/16" less than the greatest thickness
of the stock to be planed.
  • The planer must not be adjusted to plane stock
    less than 1/4" thick.
  • Stock less than 14 inches long should not be run
    through the planer.
  • When operating the planer, student must not allow
his hands to come near the feed rollers.
  • Students must not attempt to move or shift boards
after the boards have been gripped by the feed
rollers. This is dangerous as fingers are likely
to be pinched between boards and bed of the
    planer.

17
Router
  • The bit of the portable router must be sharp and
    fastened securely in the machine.
  • The fingers of the hand should be kept clear of
the blades by holding the handles of the machine
    firmly.
  • When using the router table, always route
    forward, never backwards.

18
Router
  • Keep handheld router flat while routing.
  • Always clamp work down, when using the handheld
    router.
  • Guard should cover bit at all times.
