  • Must be signed by student and parent/guardian by
    Wednesday, August 19th
  • Must pass safety quiz on August 19th to
    participate in lab work.
  • NO CONTRACT --- NO LAB WORK!

GENERAL GUIDELINES
  • Be Responsible by
  • 1. Behaving properly
  • 2. Following written AND verbal instructions
  • 2. When in doubt, ask!
  • 3. Never working alone.
  • 4. NOT TOUCHING MATERIALS before being told to.
  • 5. Not eating, drinking, or chewing gum.

General Rules
  • Do not make up your own experiments
  • Read all directions before you start.
  • No goofing off.
  • Keep your area neat and tidy
  • Everything off your work station but the
    equipment and your lab sheet.
  • 10. Keep aisles clear.

  • 12. Work in a well-ventilated area
  • 13. BE ALERT! Notify anything unsafe.
  • 14. DISPOSE OF CHEMICAL WASTE PROPERLY do not
    pour down the sink unless authorized.
  • 15. Read chemical labels before using and double
    check

WASTE DISPOSAL
  • All solid materials must be placed in proper
    receptacle unless otherwise instructed.
  • All broken glassware should be discarded in
    labeled container.
  • All chemical waste must be placed in labeled
    waste jar for disposal.

  • 16.Wash hands and clean work area.
  • 17. Do not wander from your station.
  • 18. Do not enter unauthorized areas unless asked
    to do so. (teacher prep room in hall is off
    limits)

  • Know the fire drill exits and procedures.
  • Grab safety backpack.
  • Turn off gas valves, and unplug hot plates
  • Close chemical lids.
  • Walk in single file silent line out back door,
    around 500 building to field.

CLOTHING
  • 23. Goggles will be worn when we use
  • Glass
  • Heat
  • Chemicals
  • 24. Let me know if you wear contacts.
  • 25. Long hair must be pulled back
  • Loose clothing and jewelry should be secured.
  • No sandals for chemistry labs.
  • 26. Wear aprons when instructed.
  • (chemistry and other messy stuff)

ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES
  • 27. Report ALL accidents immediately.
  • 28. Yell code one, code one to get my
    attention.
  • 29. Flush eyes/skin with water for at least 20
    minutes if chemical accident occurs
  • 30. Notify instructor of broken glass. (we do
    not use mercury thermometers.

HANDLING CHEMICALS
  • 31.All chemicals in the lab are considered
    dangerous Do not taste, touch, or smell unless
    told.
  • 32. Check labels
  • 33. Do NOT cross-contaminate- do not put
    leftovers in original container. Place in
    provided beaker.
  • 36. Handle acids with extreme caution.
  • 38. Dont take chemicals out of the classroom.
  • 39. Use care when transferring materials from
    one place to another in the room

HANDLING GLASSWARE AND EQUIPMENT
  • If you break glass, tell me first.
  • 41. Never handle broken glass with bare hands
  • 41. Dispose of broken glassware in broken glass
    bin, NOT THE TRASH!
  • 44. Grasp the plug not the cord!
  • 45. EXAMINE ALL GLASSWARE BEFORE USE
  • 46. Report all damaged equipment to the
    instructor
  • 47. When in doubt ask!
  • 48. Do not immerse hot glassware into cold water

HEATING SUBSTANCES
  • 49. Use CAUTION when working with Bunsen Burner!
  • 49. Do NOT reach over an exposed flame!
  • 50. Never leave a lit burner or hot plate
    unattended!
  • 50. TURN OFF when not in use!
  • 51. Point test tubes away from you and others
  • 52. Let things COOL before handling. When
    glassware is hot, use tongs.
  • 53. Do not look into heating container.
