• Journal 13 What one thing would you like to
  accomplish in the next year? What do you need to
  do in order to accomplish it (write in detail)?

What are goals?

• Something you want and are willing to work for.
• Goals
• Motivate
• Define values, standards, personal traits
• Identify what you hope to accomplish

Types of goals

• Long-term goals Longer than one year
• Can take up to 5 years or more
• Take several steps to accomplish
• Great deal of time and effort
• Short-term goals Less than a year
• Can be steps toward the long-term

When working toward a goal

• Write it down
• Have a plan and be specific
• Monitor progress (journaling)

S.M.A.R.T. Goals

• Specific should answer who what where when and
  why
• Measurable how much, how many or how will I
  know it is accomplished
• Attainable if you work hard, can you achieve it
• Realistic willing and able to work to reach
  goal
• Time must set specific time limits for each step

Goals must

• Be important to you, personally
• Be within your power to make it happen through
  your own actions
• Be something you have a reasonable chance of
  achieving
• Be clearly defined and have a specific plan of
  action

Incorrect Example

• I will do better in English.
• Is it measurable?
• What about time?

SMART Goal Statement

• I will increase my grade in English to an A by
  the end of this term.
• Make sure to use action verbs
• Will rather than I want.
