Title: What is the Endocrine System

1
What is the Endocrine System
  • Regulates long term changes in the body such as
    growth and development

2
Complete endocrine vocabulary using pages 460 -

Endocrine Gland a group of organs that produce
and release chemical substances that signal
changes in other parts of the body
3
ENDOCRINE GLAND FUNCTION
THYROID Regulates the bodys overall metabolic rate and controls calcium levels in the bloodstream
PARATHYROID Regulate levels of calcium and phosphorus
HYPOTHALAMUS An endocrine gland in the brain, responsible for signaling the release of hormones from other parts of the brain
PITUATARY Controls many of your bodys functions including growth, reproduction, and metabolism
THYMUS Hormones released by the thymus gland help the immune system develop during childhood.
ADRENAL Release several hormones including adrenaline.
4
Male Reproductive System
  • Function is to produce sex hormones, to produce
and store sperm, and to deliver sperm to the
    female reproductive system

5
  • Because they are located outside of the body, the
temperature of the testes is a few degrees lower
then the rest of the body. Sperm need this
lower temperature to develop properly and
    survive.
  • Several million sperm are released during one
    ejaculation.
  • Caring for the male reproductive system involves
    cleanliness, sexual abstinence, protection from
trauma, self-exams, and regular medical checkups

6
Female Reproductive System
  • The functions of the female reproductive system
are to produce sex hormones, to produce eggs, and
to provide a nourishing environment in which a
fertilized egg can develop into a baby.

7
DAY OF MENSTRAL CYCLE STAGES OF MENSTRAL CYCLE
DAY 1-4 The uterine lining is shed during menstruation
DAY 5-13 An egg matures in one of the ovaries and the uterine lining thickens
DAY 14-15 The ovary releases the mature egg during ovulation
DAY 16-22 The egg travels through the fallopian tube to the uterus, and the uterine lining continues to thicken
DAY 23-28 The unfertilized egg enters the uterus
8
The Menstrual Cycle
  • During the menstrual cycle, an ovary releases a
mature egg. The egg travels to the uterus. If
the egg is not fertilized, the uterine lining is
shed and a new cycle begins
  • Caring for the female reproductive system
    involves cleanliness, sexual abstinence, prompt
    treatment for infections, self-exams, and
    regular medical checkups.
  • Once a female has reached puberty, it is
recommended to have a yearly check up by a
    gynecologist.
  • During the yearly exam the doctor will perform a
Pap smear, this is when a sample of cells is
    taken from the cervix.
