The Endocrine System
  • Pg.218-219

2
The Endocrine system
  • The body system that consists of gland that
    produce hormones.
  • Gland A group of cell that secretes hormones
  • Hormone is a chemical messenger released into
    the bloodstream

3
Hypothalamus
  • The hypothalamus is an area of the brain that
    produces hormones that control
  • Body temperature, Hunger, Moods, Release of
hormones from many glands, especially the
pituitary gland, Sex drive, Sleep, and Thirst

4
Pituitary gland
  • Master gland
  • It controls all other glands
  • It is located below the hypothalamus in the
    brain.
  • It is about the size of a pea

5
Thyroid Glad
  • Produces thyroxin. This is the thyroid gland.
  • This hormone (thyroxin) controls metabolism and
    calcium balance in the body.
  • Metabolism is the rate at which food is converted
    into energy

6
Parathyroid glands
  • These glands release hormones which control the
amount of calcium and phosphorus in the body.
  • There are four parathyroid glands.
  • They are about the size of a grain of rice.

7
Adrenal Glands
  • Adrenal glands are triangle-shaped glands located
    on top of the kidneys
  • he inner part of the adrenal gland is called the
medulla and produces adrenaline and noradrenaline

8
Pancreas
  • A fish-shaped spongy grayish-pink organ about 6
inches (15 cm) long that stretches across the
back of the abdomen, behind the stomach. The head
of the pancreas is on the right side of the
abdomen and is connected to the duodenum (the
first section of the small intestine). The narrow
end of the pancreas, called the tail, extends to
the left side of the body.
  • 1 to produce pancreatic endocrine hormones (eg,
insulin glucagon), which help regulate many
aspects of our metabolism and 2 to produce
    pancreatic digestive enzymes.
