6What is teacher leadership?
- Teacher leadership is the process by which
teachers, individually or collectively, influence
their colleagues, principals, and other members
of the school community to improve teaching and
learning practices with the aim of increased
student learning and achievement. - Teacher leadership is the process by which

10Turn Talk
- How does your district/school define and promote
teacher leadership?
11Why Now in This Era of PARRC?
- Highly effective teachers directly impact student
learning - Teacher leaders lead and influence change
- Teacher leaders support and train colleagues
-
12Did you know?
- Teacher leadership needs to be formalized and
funded because there will be 2 million new
teachers in classrooms around North America in
the next six years, and they need leaders in the
classroom that they can look up to and learn from
as they negotiate through their first years of
teaching. - Becky Pringle, NEA
13Did you also know?
- When districts fail to use high-performing
teachers to support their colleagues growth and
development, administrators and coaches remain
overburdened, and teachers-as well as many
students are left lacking individualized support. - Rachel Curtis, Aspen Institute
14Research
- Principals satisfaction with their jobs in the
public schools has decreased nine percentage
points since it was last measured in 2008. In
that same period, teacher satisfaction has
dropped precipitously by 23 percentage points,
including a five-point decrease in the last year,
to the lowest level it has been in the survey in
25 years. A majority of teachers report that they
feel under great stress at least several days a
week, a significant increase from 1985 when this - was last measured.
- MetLife Survey 2013
15More Research
- Teachers in the US spend 80 of their work day
directly interacting with students, compared to
60 of other industrialized countries. That
leaves them less time to analyze data, plan
instruction, and collaborate with colleagues, all
activities that research ties to improvement in
instruction and student outcomes.
16Potential Barriers
- Culture of district does not embrace teacher
leadership - Trust is not established among administration and
teaching team - Too much top-down leadership
- Teachers expertise and professionalism are
undervalued - Teacher leadership opportunities are limited
