The Nobel Prize in Medicine for cells that form
a positioning system in the brain
2
The Nobel Prize Medicine has gone to John O'Keefe
and May-Britt and Edvard Moser for work on cells
that form a positioning system in the brain.
Their research helps better understand how people
orient themselves, and it could prove useful in
Alzheimer's research, because of the part of the
brain those cells lie in -- the hippocampus.
Primarily, the scientists have helped answer the
fundamental questions of how we know where we
are, where we're going and how we remember it
all, so that we can repeat our trips. OKeefe, a
London neuroscientist, made the first discovery
in 1971, with identifying place cells. In 2005,
the Mosers, Nowegian neuroscientists, discovered
yet another component called "grid cells. Now
they have figured out how place and grid cells
work together. Monday's ceremony will be held in
Stockholm (Sweden) and the prize comes with an
1.2 million. Two Americans and a German shared
the Nobel Prize in medicine last year.

Wolf, who's led in the polls for months. Voters
also will decide races for Congress and the
Legislature. People who want to register for the
first time or to change their address or

  • The Great Amazing Race came to Bensalem Sunday
but it wasnt the TV show that features teams of
competitors racing around the world for a 1
million prize. Sundays race was put on by the
    Cincinnati-based Great Amazing Race organization
that brings families together to have fun and
compete for ribbons and a chance to go to
regional contests. At 3 p.m., dozens of teams
lined up at Neshaminy State Park in Bensalem to
race around a mile-long course that featured six
obstacle stations designed to promote teamwork,
communication and skills. Each station was marked
with clue cards that told participants what was
expected of them. Each group registered under its
own names Cow Tippers Two Guys, One Beard The
Winners and Amazing Pacers among them. The
course brought out friendly rivalry and much
laughter as each team read, then tried to follow
    directions at each stop.
