Obama to nominate Janet Yellen as Fed chair

• President Obama will nominate Janet Yellen to
  serve as the next chair of the Federal Reserve, a
  senior White House official said Tuesday. The
  announcement will be made on Wednesday at 300
  p.m., the official said. If Yellen is confirmed
  by the Senate, she will be the first woman to
  head the central bank in its 100-year history.
  Yellen got the nod based on a robust résumé,
  including more than a decade in various Federal
  Reserve roles. She currently serves as Fed vice
  chair and has pushed for the central bank to
  stimulate the economy to address high U.S.
  unemployment. Her views are considered to be
  closely aligned with current Chairman Ben
  Bernanke, and for that reason, the leadership
  transition is expected to be smooth once his term
  ends in January.

• Russian investigators said Wednesday they had
  found narcotics on a Greenpeace ship whose crew
  was detained in the Arctic last month -- an
  allegation quickly disputed by Greenpeace as a
  smear. Some of the 30 people who were aboard the
  icebreaker Arctic Sunrise are likely to face
  additional charges, the Russian Investigative
  Committee said. Authorities say they think the
  narcotics include opium.
• For the first time since Cory Monteith's untimely
  death in July, the fallen actor's on- and
  off-screen girlfriend Lea Michele has addressed
  her loss in an interview. "I feel like, for me
  personally, I've lost two people Cory and Finn,"
  Michele told the magazine. But even though
  Monteith's death was devastating, Michele added
  that she never really considered quitting the
  show "Everyone is asking, 'Is it hard to do
  this? Is it hard to be back at work?' But the
  truth is, it's no harder at work than it is in
  life so we might as well all be together as a
  family supporting each other to get through this
  together."
• Wildlife photographer David "Baz" Jenkins seems
  to have a knack for photographing great white
  sharks. His website is filled with pictures of
  the fearsome predators leaping from the sea and
  devouring seals. But a photo Jenkins took during
  a July shark-watching cruise in South Africa is
  garnering the Irish photographer so much
  attention that his website was having trouble
  keeping up Wednesday after numerous media outlets
  published his shots. One photo shows a seal
  seemingly balanced on the tip of the rising
  shark's mouth, moments away from becoming a meal.
  Later photos in the series show the seal twisting
  away and escaping as the giant shark's jaws snap
  shut.
