Title: Shark Science Lab

1
Shark Science Lab
  • One of the most fun days of ocean science was
when we did a co-op on sharks with some home
    school friends.

2
We each got to teach a lesson about a sea
creature. Teaching is hard! I taught on sea
stars.
3
Reading about sharks!
We learned quite a bit about sharks from a book
Mom read to our class.
4
Home School Lunches Can Be Fun!
Our lunch was pretty good and fun to eat. We had
crab shell biscuits with tuna salad, sand dollar
crackers, flounder pears, crab cupcakes, octopus
S-cream, and shark invested ocean punch.
5
We had labs where we measured different sharks
with calculator tape and one in which we
demonstrated the sense of smell a shark has in
detecting blood.
6
Examining an actual shark was the most
interesting part of the day!
7
Our Shark
  • You can see that our shark was a baby one.
  • Our home school friends had gotten him when they
    were at the ocean.
  • School is always in session in home school. Even
    on vacation!

8
  • We learned many things about sharks.
  • Here we are feeling his scales which are very
    rough.
  • In some countries, shark scales have been used as
    sandpaper.

9
Dissection Begins!
  • We first noted the streamlined body of the shark
and the sensors and gills that helped the shark
    survive.
  • Then Mom made the first cut.
  • We were all a bit squeamish at first.

10
Sharks Interior
  • The sharks insides were neat to see. Here you
can make out the liver and stomach.
  • We found small fish scale remains in the tummy.

11
Sharks Interior
  • The heart was really neat. We only saw one main
valve coming from it, but it was dark red and
looked much like a picture of a human heart.

12
A Sharks Eye
  • The sharks eye was very interesting.
  • It was much larger than you would expect.
  • It was also closely connected to the brain.

13
I want to be a veterinarian someday, so
dissecting is good practice for me
14
I Love Science!
  • Some children hate to dissect, but I cant wait
    for our next dissecting adventure!
  • Thanks to Mrs. Settle for taking pictures
  • And thanks to you for visiting my site!
