Vladimir Lenin

• He was thrown out of Russia
• He returned and overthrew the govt
• Started a revolution

• Russian people began rioting
• Troops were sent in to put down the uprising
• A weak govt had taken over the Czars
• Lenin and his supporters pushed the weak govt
  aside

• Everyone is equal
• Everyone should share the work equally and
  receive equal share of rewards

• Appealed greatly to many people (serfs)
• No longer rich vs poor

Building Communism

• Treaty ended the war, but not peace
• Civil war in Russia (lost millions)
• It lasted 3 years and the communists party gained
  victory
• U.S.S.R. was created (Union of the Soviet
  Socialists Republic)

WW2

• In 1939, Stalin signed an agreement with the
  Germans not to fight each other
• However, in 1941 3 million Germans attacked
  Russia with tanks and airplanes
• German victory appeared likely

• Soviet cities were destroyed and Russia was in
  trouble, HOWEVER.
• Harsh Winter came and began pushing the Germans
  backwards.WHY???
• In 1945 Soviet troops captured Berlin, the
  capital of Germany

• After WW2 The U.S. and Soviet Union were the
  worlds 2 strongest countries
• WAR OF WORDS, no fighting
• Nuclear Bombs are created (early 1960s
• U.S. wanted to stop the spread of communism (iron
  curtain)

• By 1980, people lost faith in the communists
  system
• Mikhail Gorbachev made changes in the Soviet
  system in 1985
• He reduced govt control of the economy
• Countries started abandoning communism

• Today, Russia faces huge challenges, after years
  of hardships
