A note to begin
  • Furlough is a complicated topic
  • There are many special situations
  • If you have questions about your personal
    situation please schedule an appointment with
    BATO staff so we can go over it together

Summer Furlough
  • Furlough will be earned and applied to FY 11
    balances
  • Employees may take furlough time during 2010 or
    2011.
  • 5.33 hours of furlough are earned for each the
    first 2/9
  • The most furlough that can be earned during the
    summer is 10.7 hours for 100 appointment

How much furlough is required
  • 8 days for full time 12-month employees
  • 6 days for full time 9-month employees
  • Other employees are prorated based on FTE or pay
  • University fixed furlough days are required
  • (4 per fiscal year)

Fixed Furlough Days 10-11
  • Friday, November 26, 2010
  • (day after Thanksgiving)
  • Friday, March 25, 2011
  • (Spring break)
  • Thursday, December 30, 2010
  • (day before New Year's Eve)
  • Friday, May 27, 2011
  • (Steam shutdown day)
  • 12 month employees OR some summer appointments

LTE and Hourly Academic Staff Appts.
  • Eligible hours are reduced by 3.065
  • No furlough leave is generated
  • Not required to report furlough hours
  • Supervisors must track hours worked

Lump Sum Appointments
  • Reduce pay automatically by 3.065
  • No furlough leave is generated
  • Not required to report furlough hours

Classified furlough time reports
  • Take fixed furlough days
  • Schedule remaining furlough days with department
    or supervisor
  • Take in 2 hour increments
  • Report on regular time sheets
  • NOTE no more then 8 hours of FTO (mandatory or
    floating) can be used in any one work week

Unclassified furlough reporting
  • Take fixed furlough days
  • Schedule remaining furlough days
  • Take furlough in 2 hour increments but must be 8
    hours in 1 week
  • If salary is reduced by 3.065 use regular Leave
    Report
  • If salary is reduced as taken, use Furlough Time
    Report

Receiving furlough reports
  • You will be notified by email every month that a
    new leave/furlough report is available in your
    portal
  • Furlough reports are due to supervisors by the
    5th of each month to be applied towards the next
    months paycheck

Furlough balances
  • Faculty and staff earning statements now include
    furlough balances
  • Your personal earning statement shows the total
    amount of furlough time you have used to date
    (TOTAL USED)
  • how much furlough time you have left for the
    fiscal year (REMAINING)
  • And the amount of FTO (if any) that was used
    during a pay period (CURR USED)
  • If you dont see your furlough balance try
    scrolling down on your paystub
  • As you continue to monitor your furlough
    deductions through the fiscal year please report
    any errors to BATO

Role of supervisors
  • All supervisors should receive a copy of a
    furlough monitor report that includes balances
    for their faculty and staff.
  • Department chairs and supervisors are responsible
    for monitoring furlough balances and working
    together to schedule remaining FTO by deadlines
  • If, by March 2011, fixed furlough days do not
    satisfy 2010-11 furlough obligation, the
    supervisor and/or manager must schedule the
    required furlough day(s) in writing and send a
    copy to BATO.

  • Can furlough be used for unpaid leave?
  • Furlough can replace a minimum of 2 hours and up
    to 8 hours per week of unpaid leave, until you
    have exhausted your furlough balance
  • What if I have split appointments?
  • You need to report your furlough based
    proportional to your appointments. See Chris or
