What are STDs?
  • Infections you can get by having sex with someone
    who has an infection.
  • Passed by having intercourse, but they can also
    be passed through other types of sex.
  • STDs can be caused by viruses or bacteria
  • STDs caused by viruses include hepatitis B,
    herpes, HIV and the human papilloma virus (HPV).
  • STDs caused by bacteria include chlamydia,
    gonorrhea and syphilis.

Chlamydia
  • Infection of the penis, vagina, or throat
  • Caused by bacteria
  • Can be spread by the vagina, penis, mouth or anus

Symptoms
  • Most people do not have any signs
  • Thick yellow or clear discharge from the vagina
    or penis
  • Pain or burning when urinating
  • Pain during sex
  • Bleeding between periods and during sex

Long-term effects
  • Chlamydia can be cured
  • If not treated
  • Can be passed to others
  • Higher chance of getting HIV
  • Vagina or penis could hurt and swell
  • Sterility
  • If pregnant, could harm the babys eyes or lungs
    during birth
  • Ectopic pregnancy

Treatment
  • Antibiotic medicine, either one dose or pills for
    a week
  • Do not have sex for at least one week after
    starting treatment

Gonorrhea
  • Infection of the penis, vagina, anus or throat
  • Can be spread by the vaginal, oral or anal sex

  • Most people do not have any signs
  • Pain when urinating or bowel movements
  • Yellow discharge from the penis or vagina
  • Pain in the testicles
  • Pain or tenderness in the abdomen (women)
  • Sore throat

  • Gonorrhea can be cured
  • If not treated
  • Can be passed to others
  • Higher chance of getting HIV
  • Joints may swell and hurt
  • Vagina or penis may swell and hurt
  • Sterility
  • Ectopic Pregnancy

  • Either get a shot or take pills
  • Do not have sex until you and your partner have
    been treated and are cured

Syphilis
  • Dangerous disease that can affect the whole body
  • Caused by bacteria
  • Can be spread by having vaginal, anal or oral sex

  • First signs
  • a painless sore called a chancre
  • Sore can be on or near the vagina, penis, mouth
    or anus
  • Sore heals by itself, but person still has
    syphilis

  • Joint pain
  • Fever

Trichomoniasis
  • Infection of the vagina or penis
  • Caused by bacteria
  • Spread by fluids from the vagina or penis

  • Signs for men
  • Itching in the urethra
  • Burning feeling when urinating
  • Signs for women
  • Foamy, smelly, yellow, green or gray discharge
    from the vagina
  • Itching or burning of the vagina
  • Burning pain when urinating

  • Pass it to others
  • Higher chance of getting HIV or another STD

Treatment
  • You must take pills
  • Make sure you and your partner(s) are treated
  • Dont have sex until you are finished treatment
    and are cured

Pubic Lice
  • Parasites and are also known as crabs
  • Crablike insects that infest pubic hair and feed
    on human blood, they attach to hair follicles and
    deposit their eggs
  • Spread by intimate physical contact with an
    infected person and close contact with infected
    bedding, clothing or towels
  • Crabs will die within 24hrs after separation from
    human body, but eggs can live up to 6 days

  • Intense itching
  • Bloodstains on underwear
  • These symptoms usually appear about 25 to 30
    after exposure

Treatment
  • Must use a special medicated shampoo to cure
    crabs
  • All infected clothing, bedding and other laundry
    must be dry cleaned or washed in hot water with a
    detergent

Genital Herpes
  • Infection caused by a virus
  • Spread through vaginal, anal and oral sex
  • Spread also by touching the infected area of
    someone who has it
  • Causes small, painful sores or blisters that can
    come and go
  • Once you get herpes the virus is always in your
    body

  • Blisters or sores in the vagina or penis, thighs
    or buttocks or mouth
  • Painful rash of blisters or sores or only one or
    two that just itch
  • Flu-like symptoms along with blisters
  • Sores may occur only once or reoccur many times

  • Can pass it on to others
  • Higher chance of getting HIV
  • Baby could get herpes while being born

Treatment
  • Since it cannot be cured there are medicines to
    help the sores heal more quickly
  • Medicine may also make blisters come less often,
    stay a shorter time and be less painful

Hepatitis B
  • Infection of the liver, caused by a virus
  • Spread through
  • Intercourse (all kinds)
  • Sharing needles or drugs
  • Sharing earrings, razors, nail clippers, or
    toothbrush
  • Body piercings or tattoos
  • Touching infected blood or bodily fluids

Symptoms
  • May feel like they have the flu
  • Yellow skin or eyes
  • No appetite
  • Feeling tired
  • Brown or dark urine
  • Light or gray stools
  • Pain in stomach or abdomen, muscles or joints

Long Term Effects
  • No cure for Hepatitis B
  • Can pass it to others
  • Higher chance of getting HIV
  • Can badly damage your liver, can even lead to
    cancer and even death
  • Baby can be born with it

Treatment
  • Each person has their own treatment plan designed
    specifically for them
  • Anyone you live with need to get the vaccine for
    hepatitis B

Genital Warts
  • Small often painless bumps in or around the
    vagina, penis, mouth or anus
  • Caused by the HPV virus
  • Spread by having sex (vaginal, anal or oral) with
    infected person

  • Small warts
  • The warts may grow in bunches or clusters
  • Warts may itch

Long Term Effects
  • The warts could grow and block the vagina
  • The baby could get the virus
  • Some wart medicines are not safe for pregnant to
    use
  • If a woman has genital warts she may also have
    another HPV that causes cervical cancer

Treatment
  • Health care provider must remove the warts
  • Warts can be removed by freezing or burning,
    sometimes it takes more than one visit to remove
    all the warts
  • Even when and if the warts are removed or go
    away, the virus stays in the body and can be
    spread to others

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
  • The virus that causes AIDS
  • Spread by having sex with an infected person or
    sharing needles with someone who has HIV
  • Mother passing it on to her baby during
    childbirth or through her breast milk
  • Can also be spread by coming into contact with an
    infected persons bodily fluid

  • Can be months or even years before one feels or
    sees any symptoms
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Night sweats
  • Feeling very tired
  • Thrush-a fungal infection of the mouth
    characterized by white patches vagina
    characterized by a white discharge and itching

  • Cannot be cured
  • Treatment can help with feeling better with this
    virus
  • Have a higher chance of getting other STDs
  • Can pass it to others
  • HIV keeps your body from fighting off diseases
