Structural Engineering Truss Bridge

• Technology Challenge

The Department of Transportation is seeking bids
from Engineering Teams to build a new truss
bridge in Snohomish County. You are required to
submit a construction design and plan to build
the strongest, most efficient bridge possible
using limited materials.

Project Activities

• Use the web to research bridges and structural
  engineering to answer the question What is a
  truss bridge?
• Sketch ideas and draw an official design.
• As an engineering team, come up with a company
  name, a company logo, company motto, and pick a
  design to submit in your proposal.

Project Activities Design Proposal

• Submit a newsletter or brochure describing your
  company, your design process, and the design
  limitations.
• Include a digital image of your design, your
  company logo, your compnay motto, and appropriate
  artwork.
• Once your proposal is accepted you will receive
  materials for construction.

Project Activities Bridge Construction

• Follow all Tech Lab Safety Procedures.
• Follow all procedures for Tool use.
• Follow all construction guidelines.
• Follow all craftsmanship guidelines.
• Bridges must be complete within 8 days from the
  time you get your materials.

Project Activities Bridge Evaluation

• Weigh your completed and dry bridge on a triple
  beam balance, record the weight to the nearest
  1/10th of a gram.
• Take a digital image of the completed bridge.
• Write a paragraph predicting how well your
  bridge will perform. How much weight will it
  hold.
• Have instructor load test your bridge, record
  results.

  Powerpoint describing this project.
