Title: How Do organisms Get Energy?
1How Do organisms Get Energy?
- Objectives
- -Learn how animals obtain nutrients.
- -Identify an ecosystems energy source.
- -Describe how energy moves through an ecosystem.
2Vocabulary
- Producer
- Food Chain
- Consumer
- Food Web
- Energy Pyramid
3Getting Energy
- Getting Energy
- Everything you do requires energy
- All living things need energy to move, eat, grow
reproduce - Energy starts with the sun
- Food Chains show how energy flows through an
ecosystem - A primary consumer is a herbivore, eats only
plants (producers) - A secondary consumer is a carnivore, eats meat
(primary consumers) - Decomposers eat the remains of dead animals
(bacteria, fungi) and then return the nutrients
in the soil.
4Vocabulary
- Producer
- An organisms that makes its own food.
- Food Chain
- A sequence of connected producers and consumers.
- Consumer
- An organism that eats other organisms.
5Food Webs
- B. Food Webs
- 1. A food chain shows feeding relationships in
ecosystems. - 2. Since most organism are part of more than
one food chain, a Food Web is a better way to
show feeding relationships. - 3. A change in one population in an ecosystem
can affect other populationsex if the
population decreased or disappeared, the animals
that feed on the mouse would have less food and
would result in their population decreasing too.
6Vocabulary
- Food Webs
- A group of connected food chains in an ecosystem.
7Insta-Lab-Brainstorm a list of organisms in your
area.-Write the name of one on a large index
card.-Use string to attach the card with your
organisms name to another students cards with
the names of organisms that eat yours or are
eaten by it.-What have you and the other
students made?
8The Energy Pyramid
C. The Energy Pyramid 1. Energy is lost each
time it passes from one organism to another. 2.
90 of an organisms energy is lost at each step
of the food chain. 3. An energy pyramid shows
that energy is lost at each level of the food
chain. 4. Because of the energy loss, the number
of organisms decrease from one level to the
next.
9Vocabulary
- Energy Pyramid
- Shows that energy is lost at each level of the
food chain.
