Sustainable innovation
Starter show alternative energy examples
2
Environment Sustainability We must consider!
  • Extraction materials sourced from?
  • Conversion conversion of materials into usable
    forms.
  • Logistics/distribution transportation of
    materials to required locations.
  • Manufacture How materials are converted to
    products.
  • Disposal Re-use? Recycle?

3
Green design
  • This is an approach in design to reduce impact
    on the environment.
  • Focuses on two main areas
  • 1. Conserving materials through using recycled
    materials in the manufacture process.
  • 2.Conserving energy when the product is in use.
  • example washing machines using lower
    temperatures and less water

4
Ecodesign
  • This goes further than green design. This is
where designers an manufactures work together to
reduce the impact of a product through its life
cycle (from raw material extraction to final
    disposal).
  • Considerations could be
  • 1. selection of low impact materials
  • 2. reduction in material usage (manufacture and
    packaging)
  • 3. reduction of impact during use and
    optimisation of products life
  • 4. optimisation of end-of-life systems (recycle,
    recovery etc)

5
Sustainable Design
  • This is where the main function of the product
in carefully analysed and a more environmentally
sound method of performing the same function is
    sort.
  • Additionally it lessens the environmental
impact of products whilst also having other
    benefits such as
  • 1. improved social welfare
  • 2. safety for workers
  • 3. fair trade schemes etc
  • example why use tumble dryers and not simple
    cabinets hearted by solar energy.

6
Sustainable Innovation
  • The most radical and new approach. Looking at
how we can mix the use of both products and
    services to reduce environmental impact.
  • Consideration why have your own washing machine
and not a community based laundry service?
  • Why not have people in communities relaying on
each other (for certain roles) and therefore
    supporting each other.
  • Are the traditional ways better for our planet?
  • Needs community spirit and involvement to work
    not the individual.

Environmental Legislation and Regulation

You need to be aware of the following -
Ecolabel - Packaging Directive - Energy
Labelling Directive - End-of-Life Vehicle
Directive - Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment Directive - Restriction of Hazardous
Substances Directive For Further information
please see Chapter 5, Page 160 of your Product
Design Text Book.

  • Examples of modern products and technology that
are attempting to consider all of the issues we
have discussed can be found in Chapter 5 pages
    164 - 167.
