Title: Welcome to Bacteria!

1
Welcome to Bacteria!
2
Interdependence
Bacteria and other organisms rely on their
environmentand other species for survival.
3
Bacteria
Organisms that are made of prokaryotic cells
4
Prokaryotic Cells
  • Have no nucleus
  • Do not have membrane bound organelles
  • Have circular pieces of DNA known as a plasmids
  • Are very smallunicellular
  • Often have a flagellum for movement

5
What kingdom?
  • Bacteria are placed into one of these kingdoms
  • Archaebacteria-ancient bacteria
  • Eubacteria-true bacteria

6
Archaebacteria
  • Live in very extreme conditions (no oxygen, no
sun, very high heat, salty regions.
  • In most conditions, are usually heterotrophic

7
Eubacteria
  • Bacteria found under normal conditions
  • Heterotrophic---parasitic (feed on plants, meats,
    milk, etc.)
  • Autotrophic---photosynthesize.

8
Shapes of bacteria
  • Bacteria are classified according to their shape
  • Round is called coccus
  • Rod shaped is called bacillus
  • Spiral shaped is called spirillus

9
Where do they live?
  • Bacteria are found in all environments

10
Reproduction
  • Binary Fissionform of asexual reproduction.
  • Conjugationtransfer of genetic information
    (sexual???)

11
Role of bacteria
  • Some bacteria are helpful to our environment
  • Some bacteria are harmful to humans and other
    living things

12
Helpful bacteria
  • Decomposers break down dead organic material
  • Biotechnology - inserting helpful genes into a
    plasmid
  • Bioremediation - bacteria eat up oil spills
  • Food production cheese and yogurt
  • Put nitrogen back into the soil
  • Aid in digestion

13
Harmful bacteria
  • Bacteria that cause diseases are called
    pathogens.
  • Some diseases caused by bacteria are
    tuberculosis anthrax tetanus e. coli
