  • There were rules on how people could interact

The Varnas/Caste System
  • Varnas are how society was divided, like social
    classes
  • Caste system was based on a persons wealth or job

  • They performed rituals for the gods
  • There were only a few of them. Only Brahman men
    were allowed to go to school, or to teach in
    schools (Brahman women could not go to school).

  • A lot of them were in the army, or leaders in
    other ways.

Untouchables
  • Untouchables usually did the worst jobs, like
    cleaning up people's poop from the gutters, or
    collecting garbage.
  • No one from any other caste were supposed to have
    contact with them
  • Were seen as outcasts

Caste Rules
  • People were not allowed to marry people from
    different castes
  • Couldnt eat with people from different castes
  • If you broke the rules then you were banned from
    your home and caste making you an untouchable
  • The effect of the caste rules was that people
    only spent time with others from their caste
