    declines and food shortages.

Great Leap Forward 1958-1962
  • Mao regained influence by backing radicals.
  • Purges and conflicts among leaders created
    economic, social, and political chaos.
  • Moderates increasingly opposed radicals in
    Communist Party.

Cultural Revolution 1966-1976
4
  • In the early 1970s the Cultural Revolution
turned many people against radical Communism.
  • Under Zhou Enlai, China began to send out signals
that it was willing to form ties with the west.

for the Peoples Republic of China.

agree to begin a cultural exchange.

5
26. I can explain the changes under Deng Xiaoping.
  • Both Mao and Zhou die in 1976 and moderates took
    control of the Communist Party.
  • Deng Xiaoping, one of the last Old
Revolutionaries wanted to use capitalist ideas
to help Chinas economy known as the Four
    Modernizations.
  • Progress in agriculture, industry, defense, and
    Science/Technology.
  • Ends Communes, farmers paid rent and could grow
whatever crops they wished to sell.

  • Food production increased 50 percent in 6 years.
  • Small private business allowed to operate.
  • Managers allowed to set their own goals.
  • Foreign technology and investment welcomed.
  • Incomes increased
  • Chinese youth adopted western style and music.
  • Tourism grew due to the new openness.

7
27. I can describe the democracy movement in
China.
  • Western investment and tourism led to an increase
    of Western political ideas.
  • Many students studied abroad and learned about
    the west.
  • These students began to question the Communist
    rule.
  • 1989- 100,000 students occupied Tiananmen square
    to protest for democracy.

8
  • The protests led to widespread support.
  • Deng declares martial law.
  • Sends 250,000 troops to surround Beijing.
  • 3,000 students go on a hunger strike and raise a
33 foot statue called the Goddess of Democracy.
  • Soldiers storm Tiananmen square with tanks,
killing hundreds of protesters and injuring
    thousands.
  • The Communist government tries to cover up the
protest and aftermath but it had already been
    broadcast all over the world.

9
28. I can list the challenges to China in the
1990s .
  • Deng dies in 1997, and General Secretary Jiang
    Zemin assumes the presidency.
  • Jiang had no military experience and had few
    allies among the generals.
  • China has a poor human rights record.
  • China was economically open but politically
    closed.

10
  • Hong Kong transferred back to Chinese control on
July 1, 1997 after 155 years of British rule.
