Scenario

• Will be in an interactive video format
• Will consist of two videos
• First will show how time can be a barrier and the
  second how it can be used effectively to aid
  communication

• It will take place on a general ward
• It will begin with a client with an
  intellectual/learning disability trying to ask a
  nurse for help
• The nurse will stop and stand over the client
  asking abruptly what do you want
• Client has only non-verbal communication skills

• Then a clock will appear it will giving the
  person using the RLO 10 seconds to try and figure
  out what the client wants
• This will be made difficult by having the client
  only begin to try and communicate what they want
  in the 10 seconds

• The user will then be asked what they think the
  client wanted from the nurse
• They will be given 4 options
• Client wished to use the toilet
• Client wanted a drink
• Client was hungry
• Dont know
• When they get it wrong or answer dont know a new
  video will appear

• It will show a calm nurse who sits next to the
  client in order to communicate and calmly asks
  the client how can I help you and take your
  time there is no rush and then a clock will
  appear giving the user 60 seconds to figure out
  what the client wants

• The client should then proceed to be seen
  pointing and making gestures that mean nothing at
  all to make the person watching the video be
  patient enough to wait.
• To ensure the message of how time is important
  the universal sign for drink should not be used
  by the client at least 30 seconds into the second
  video

• They may stop the video at any time if they feel
  they know the answer the will be given three
  choices which will be
• Client wished to use the toilet
• Client wanted a drink
• Client was hungry
• The correct answer being the client wanted a drink

• Then the nurse says oh you would like a drink
  the clients nods yes in answer and the video ends
  and asks the user the question Did you ever
  think that one minute could make a difference
