  • Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them
to obey everything I have commanded
    you. Matthew 28 19 - 20
  • This is THE GREAT COMMISSION

5
WHAT IS THE MISSION?

  • a mission based on the invitation of Jesus
  • Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest. Matthew 1128

7
THE PROBLEM
  • The problem is the nature of mankind
  • We are SINFUL.

9
THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF DISCIPLESHIP
  • The Christ-like life if developed through
    practicing five basic inner disciplines...

10
THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF DISCIPLESHIP
  • 1) Reading, memorizing and studying SCRIPTURE.

11
SCRIPTURE
  • There is no minimizing the importance of
    Scripture in a disciples life!
  • Scripture
  • teaches us
  • rebukes, or admonishes us
  • corrects us
  • equips us for every good work

12
THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF DISCIPLESHIP
  • Developing vital communication with God through
    PRAYER.

13
WHY PRAY?
  • A. Example of Jesus
  • B. Antidote to Temptations
  • C. Communication with God
  • A - ADORATION
  • C - CONFESSION
  • T - THANKSGIVING
  • S - SUPPLICATION

14
THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF DISCIPLESHIP
  • 3) Giving the HOLY SPIRIT freedom to conform our
lives into the spiritual nature. Also, to
find, develop and use our spiritual gifts.

15
THE HOLY SPIRIT...
  • is the Spirit of Truth
  • is a Teacher
  • functions as a Witness
  • is an Advocate
  • speaks for God

16
THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF DISCIPLESHIP
  • 4) Seeking to live a truly HOLY LIFE, not
conformed to the world, but transformed in heart
    and mind.

17
HOLINESS
  • Holiness is growing into the likeness of Christ,
resulting from the ministry of Christ in our
    minds, motives, decisions, deeds, words,
    characters and conduct.
  • Commissioner Edward Read

18
THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF DISCIPLESHIP
  • 5) Looking on the world, on individuals, with
    the COMPASSION Jesus had.

19
COMPASSION
  • If Jesus was here to move us to compassion for
hurting people, who would he move us towards in
    our communities
  • the least of these?

20
SO, HOWS IT GOING?
  • What disciplines are currently being developed in
    your life?
  • Where have your struggles been?
  • Have you had the time you want or need to
    practice these inner disciplines?
  • What things distract you?

21
ADD ON CHRISTIANITY
  • We add a little Christianity/spirituality
  • to our personality
  • to our job
  • to our family activities

22
ADD ON CHRISTIANITY
  • When we run into difficulties and problems, we
    think
  • if I just pray more...
  • if I go to Church more...
  • if I read my Bible more...

23
EARTHY SPIRITUALITY
  • Lets learn from a local favorite
  • RICE!

24
EARTHY SPIRITUALITY
  • This is the secret to a balanced Christian life
  • WORK IT A BIT AT A TIME!

25
DISCIPLESHIP
  • A DOOR to be opened and a PATH to be followed.

Christ-like life and are being filled with the
    FULLNESS of GOD...

30
TEMPTATION
  • WE NEED TO BE CAREFUL AND ALERT!

31
TEMPTATION
  • Lets read out loud together
  • Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your
adversary, the devil prowls about like a roaring
lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him,
    stand firm in your faith.

32

37
WHEN TEMPTED
  • Jesus had been affirmed by God and Baptism by a
dove. Jesus was clear on His mission of
redemption. The question was one of strategy --
how and what would Jesus do? This is the whole
focus of the temptation -- the HOW of life.
  • Bruce Larson

38
WHEN TEMPTED
  • Satans basic STRATEGY is to make us believe that
    God is NOT trustworthy.
  • Satans basic LIE is that we CANNOT trust God.
  • Therefore, our basic SIN, our yielding to
    temptation, is to
  • MISTRUST GOD.

39
WHEN TEMPTED
  • Get into 4 new groups.
  • Individually, take time to study
  • Gods Word and answer
  • the questions 1 through 4.
  • (Stop when you come
  • to the Unison Reading.)

40
WHEN TEMPTED

tool in dealing with temptation is
  • SCRIPTURE
  • reveals the trustworthiness of God
  • keeps us trustworthy and faithful Psalm 11911

  • Colossians 32 SET YOUR MIND ON GODLY THINGS
  • James 47 SUBMIT TO GOD -- RESIST THE DEVIL

42
WHEN TEMPTED
  • 3) According to Hebrews 415, what areas was
    Jesus tempted in?
  • ALL AREAS, JUST AS WE ARE

    Jesus?
  • HE IS OUR HIGH PRIEST

43
WHEN TEMPTED
  • We have learned
  • everyone faces temptation
  • temptation does NOT have to lead to sin!

44
TEMPTATION
  • Lets read this again out loud
  • Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your
adversary, the devil prowls about like a roaring
lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him,
    stand firm in your faith.

45
TEMPTATION
  • And after you have suffered for a little while,
the God of all grace, who called you to His
eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect,
    confirm, strengthen and establish you.
  • 1 Peter 5 8 - 10

46
THE CHALLENGE
  • The challenge is

    should love God
  • God preserves faithful saints
  • God brings down the prideful

  • The end of this world, the final judgment sending
    people to their destiny
  • Many will fall away -- love grows cold
  • Many will stand firm and hang on!
  • The second group of Christians, the faithful,
    will spend eternity in heaven

51
THE CHALLENGE
  • Scripture is full of challenges to REMAIN
    FAITHFUL
  • and to
  • STAND FIRM.
  • We do today what we want because we cant
    really comprehend a forever tomorrow.

52
THE CHALLENGE
  • Live keeping one eye on JESUS in HEAVEN and one

SESSION THREE
  • OUTER DISCIPLINES

55
AIM...
  • To see that the basics of discipleship, the
inner disciplines, naturally lead to the
    blossoming of the outer disciplines.
  • To discover these outer disciplines that should
be evidenced in a disciples life.

56
THE TREE OF SPIRITUAL GROWTH
OUTER DISCIPLINES
INNER DISCIPLINES
  • Bible reading
  • Seeking a Holy Life
  • Spirit-filled living
  • Compassion
  • Prayer

57
STEWARDSHIP - defined
  • Stewardship
  • is what we do with what God has given to us and
    entrusted to our care.
  • involves a reality knowing what we have.
  • involves responsibility the wise use of what we
    have.

58
STEWARDSHIP
  • Everything comes from You, and we have given You
only what comes from Your hand. 1 Chronicles
    2914b
  • Jesus said, Everything You have given me comes
from You, and All I have is Yours, and all You
    have is mine.
  • John 177b, 10

59
3 As of STEWARDSHIP
  • ALL...
  • Every good and perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of the heavenly
lights, who does not change like shifting
    shadows.
  • James 117

60
3 As of STEWARDSHIP
  • ADMINISTER...
  • Now it is required that those who have been
given a trust must prove faithful.
  • 1Corinthians 42

61
3 As of STEWARDSHIP
  • ACCOUNTABLE...
  • For we must all appear before the judgment seat
of Christ, that each one may receive what is due
him for the things done while in the body,
    whether good or bad.
  • 2Corinthians 510

62
PARABLE of the TALENTS
  • Again, it will be like a man going on a journey,
who called his servants and entrusted his
    property to them.
  • To one he gave five talents of money, to another
two talents, and to another one talent, each
according to his ability. Then he went on
    his journey.

63
PARABLE of the TALENTS
  • The man who had received the five talents went
at once and put his money to work and gained five
    more.
  • So also, the one with the two talents gained two
    more.
  • But the man who had received the one talent went
off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his
    masters money.

64
PARABLE of the TALENTS
  • After a long time the master of those servants
returned and settled accounts with them.
  • The man who had received
  • the five talents brought the
  • other five. Master, he said,
  • you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have
    gained five more.

65
PARABLE of the TALENTS
  • His master replied, Well done, good and
faithful servant! You have been faithful with a
few things I will put you in charge of many
things. Come and share your masters happiness!
  • The man with the two talents also came.
    Master, he said, you
  • entrusted me with two
  • talents see, I have
  • gained two more.

66
PARABLE of the TALENTS
  • His master replied, Well done, good and
faithful servant! You have been faithful with a
few things I will put you in charge of many
things. Come and share your masters happiness!
  • Then the man who had received the one talent
came. Master, he said, I knew that you are a
    hard man,

67
PARABLE of the TALENTS
  • harvesting where you have not sown and
gathering where you have not scattered
    seed.
  • So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent
in the ground. See, here is what belongs to
    you.
  • His master replied, You wicked, lazy servant!
So you knew that I harvest

68
PARABLE of the TALENTS
  • where I have not sown and gather where I have
    not scattered seed.
  • Well then, you should have put my money on
deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned
I would have received it back with interest.
  • Take the talent from him and give it to the one
    who has the ten talents.

69
PARABLE of the TALENTS
  • For everyone who has will be given more, and he
will have an abundance. Whoever does not have,
even what he has will be taken from him.
  • And throw the worthless servant outside, into the
darkness, where there will be weeping and
    gnashing of teeth. Matthew 25 14 - 30

70
3 BASIC AREAS of STEWARDSHIP
  • TIME...
  • 24 hours
  • 1440 minutes
  • 86,400 seconds!
  • HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?

71
TIME
  • There is a time for everything, and a season for
    every activity under heaven
  • A time to be born and a time to die, a time to
plant and a time to uproot,
  • a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear
down and a time to build,

72
TIME
  • a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to
mourn and a time to dance,
  • a time to scatter stones and a time to gather
them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
  • a time to search and a time to give up, a time to
keep and a time to throw away,

73
TIME
  • a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be
silent and a time to speak,
  • a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war
    and a time for peace.
  • Ecclesiastes 3 1 - 8

74
TIME
  • Be very careful, then, how you live -- not as
    unwise but as wise,
  • making the most of every opportunity, because the
    days are evil.
  • Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what
    the Lords will is.
  • Ephesians 5 15 - 17

75
TIME
  • There is a time for everything
  • Everything has its moment
  • So use time wisely,
  • be disciplined about time,
  • be wise about time.

76
TIME
  • How do we use time unwisely?
  • How do we squander time?
  • How do we abuse the idea that there is a time for
    everything?

77
TIME - Personal Inventory
  • Where do I need to adjust my usage of time?
  • What do I need to change to become a better
    steward of my/Gods time?

78
TIME
  • You turn men back to dust, saying, Return to
dust, O sons of men. For a thousand years in
your sight are like a day that has just gone by,
or like a watch in the night The length of our
days is seventy years -- or eighty, if we have
the strength yet their span is but trouble and
    sorrow,

79
TIME
  • for they quickly pass, and we fly away. Teach
us to number our days aright, that we may gain a
    heart of wisdom.
  • Psalm 903, 4, 10, 12

80
TIME
  • Time is the coin of your life. It is the only
one you have, and only you can determine how it
will be spent. Be careful lest you let others
spend it for you. Lost time is never found
    again.
  • Unknown

81
3 BASIC AREAS of STEWARDSHIP
  • TALENT...
  • The natural abilities we have inherited are our
    first birth talent.
  • The spiritual gifts we receive after our
salvation are our second birth talent.

82
NATURAL TALENTS vs. SPIRITUAL GIFTS
  • WHATS THE DIFFERENCE???

83
TALENTS vs. GIFTS
  • SOURCE
  • from God
  • through parents
  • from God
  • independent of parents

84
TALENTS vs. GIFTS
  • POSSESSED
  • from birth
  • from conversion

85
TALENTS vs. GIFTS
  • PURPOSE
  • to benefit mankind on the natural level
  • to benefit mankind on the spiritual level

86
TALENTS vs. GIFTS
  • PROCESS
  • must be recognized, developed, exercised
  • must be recognized, developed, exercised

87
TALENTS vs. GIFTS
  • FUNCTION
  • ought to be dedicated by believers to God for His
    glory and us
  • given to be used to Gods glory

88
TALENT
  • Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord, not for men.
  • Colossians 323

89
TALENT
  • Each one should use whatever gift he has
    received to serve others, faithfully
administering Gods grace in its various forms.

90
TALENT
  • If anyone speaks, he should do it as one
speaking the very words of God. If anyone
serves, he should do it with the strength God
provides, so that in all things God may be
praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the
glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
  • 1 Peter 4 10 - 11

91
TALENT
  • How are we to be good stewards of our talents and
    spiritual gifts?
  • Use whatever you have for others
  • Through your talents and gifts, Gods grace will
    be seen and felt
  • Do what you can and try NOT to give in to the
    desire to be someone else

92
TALENT - Personal Inventory
  • How am I using my talents
  • gifts for God and others?
  • What are some new ways I can use my talents
    gifts for God and others?

93
WORSHIP
  • A Faithful Steward
  • USES THE GIFT AND
  • WORSHIPS THE GIVER
  • An Unfaithful Steward
  • WORSHIPS THE GIFT AND
  • USES THE GIVER

94
3 BASIC AREAS of STEWARDSHIP
  • TREASURE...
  • means our money, but also all our material
    possessions.
  • 12 of the 38 parables told by Jesus were about
    money!

95
TREASURE
  • How can we be good stewards of our treasure?
  • MONEY
  • POSSESSIONS

96
TREASURE
  • EXCERPTS FROM THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT -- Matthew
    6
  • Do not store up for yourselves treasures on
earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where
    thieves break in and steal.

97
TREASURE
  • But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where moth and rust do not destroy, where thieves
do not break in and steal. For where your
treasure is, there your heart will be also.

98
TREASURE
  • No one can serve two masters. Either he will
hate the one and love the other, or he will be
devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot
    serve both God and money.

99
TREASURE
  • Do not worry about your life, what you will eat
or drink or about your body, what you will
wear. Look at the birds of the air, your
heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much
more valuable than they? And why do you worry
about clothes? See how the lilies of the field
grow. If that is how God clothes the grass of
    the field,

100
TREASURE
  • will he not much more clothe you? So do not
worry about what you shall eat or drink or wear.
The pagans run after all these things, and your
heavenly Father knows that you need them. But
seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and
all these things will be given to you as well.

101
ATTITUDE EXAMPLES
  • In everything I did, I showed you that by this
kind of hard work we must help the weak,
remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself
said It is more blessed to give than to
    receive. Acts 2035
  • THERE IS MORE BLESSING IN GIVING THAN IN RECEIVING

102
ATTITUDE EXAMPLES
  • As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting
their gifts into the temple treasury.
  • He also saw a poor widow put in two very small
    copper coins.
  • I tell you the truth, he said, this poor widow
has put in more than all the others.

103
ATTITUDE EXAMPLES
  • All these people have their gifts out of their
wealth but she out of her poverty put in all
she had to live on. Luke 21 1 - 4
  • SHE DIDNT GIVE A BARE MINIMUM, SHE GAVE LARGELY

104
ATTITUDE EXAMPLES
  • And now, brothers, we want you to know about the
grace that God has given the Macedonian churches.
  • Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing
joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich
    generosity.

105
ATTITUDE EXAMPLES
  • For I testify that they gave as much as they
were able, and even beyond their ability.
Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with
us for the privilege of sharing in this service
    to the saints.

106
ATTITUDE EXAMPLES
  • And they did not do as we expected, but they
gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us
    in keeping with Gods will.
  • So we urged Titus, since he had earlier made a
beginning, to bring also to completion this act
    of grace on your part.

107
ATTITUDE EXAMPLES
  • But just as you excel in everything -- in faith,
in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness
and in your love for us -- see that you also
excel in this grace of giving.
  • 2 Corinthians 8 1 - 7

108
ATTITUDE EXAMPLES
  • THEY EXCELLED IN GIVING
  • A POOR PEOPLE WHO STILL GAVE GENEROUSLY, EVEN
GIVING MORE THAN THEY OR OTHERS THOUGHT POSSIBLE!

109
ATTITUDE EXAMPLES
  • Remember this Whoever sows sparingly will also
reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will
    also reap generously.
  • Each man should give what he has decided in his
heart to give, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

110
ATTITUDE EXAMPLES
  • And God is able to make all grace abound to you,
so that in all things at all times, having all
that you need, you will abound in every good
    work.
  • 2 Corinthians 9 6 - 8

111
PRINCIPLES OF GIVING
  • GIVE A LITTLE, GET A LITTLE
  • IF YOU ARE GENEROUS, THE GENEROSITY OF GOD AND
    OTHERS WILL COME TO YOU
  • EVERYONE SHOULD GIVE FROM A CHEERFUL, LOVING
HEART, NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE FORCED OR COERCED

112
TO THINK ABOUT...
  • People show who they are and what they think of
their God by what they do with that which has
been given to them by their God.

113
WHAT ABOUT TITHING?
  • THE McDONALDS PLAN
  • When you eat at McDonalds,
  • you pay McDonalds.
  • You dont eat at McDonalds and pay at Burger
    King!

114
HOW MUCH SHOULD A DISCIPLE TITHE?
  • Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first
    fruits of all your crops
  • Proverbs 39
  • Tithe money should come out before all other
    needs are dealt with.

115
HOW MUCH SHOULD A DISCIPLE TITHE?
  • Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that
there may be food in my house. Malachi 310
  • Bring the whole tithe -- the Old Testament tithe
    was 10.
  • The first disciples tithed everything.

116
STEPS TO GIVING
  • 1) Thoughtfully decide what percentage of your
income you will designate to the Lords work.
  • 2) Set aside this money first whenever you
    receive your wages.
  • 3) Discipline yourself to be regular in the
    practice of giving.

117
AND ABOUT MISSIONS?
  • The Founder was our example
  • he gave up bread pudding during Lent, calling it
    self-denial.
  • See your handout Touching Peoples Lives Far,
Far Away for ideas on sacrificial giving for
    missions...

118
TREASURE - Personal Inventory
  • What percentage of my income goes to Godly
    purposes?
  • Which areas of Gods ministry is He asking me to
    support as a good steward?

119

  • (15 minutes)

124
THE HARVEST
  • WHAT IS A HARVEST?
  • The gathering of crops that are mature or ripe
  • The farmer works toward and waits for it with
    great anticipation
  • There is urgency because of the short amount of
time the crops can be gathered before they spoil

125
THE HARVEST
  • WHAT IS A SPIRITUAL HARVEST?
  • Refers to people ready to put their trust in
    Jesus Christ

126
THE HARVEST
  • HOW CAN I BE INVOLVED IN THE HARVEST?
  • This is the inevitable outcome, or fruit, of your
    spiritual journey of discipleship
  • When God has your time, talent and treasure, you
have opportunities to participate in His harvest

127
THE MISSION
  • THE GREAT COMMISSION --
  • Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them
to obey everything I have commanded
    you. Matthew 28 19 - 20

128
THE MISSION
  • Fulfilling the Great Commission we lead people
    to REPENTANCE and OBEDIENCE.
  • The goal of discipling another is to help them
    BECOME MORE LIKE JESUS.
  • And while they are becoming more like Jesus, we
also want them to KNOW who God created THEM to be.

129
SIMPLE CURRICULUM
  • Discipleship says,
  • Follow me as I follow Jesus.
  • So, the curriculum is simple!
  • 1) TEACH someone what I was taught.
  • 2) Teach someone to OBEY as I have and am
    learning to obey.

130
SUCCESSFUL DISCIPLING
  • Discipling must be
  • INTENTIONAL and
  • VOLUNTARY.
  • Discipling must be
  • RELATIONAL.

131
SUCCESSFUL DISCIPLING
  • 3) Discipling must be OPEN and VULNERABLE.
  • 4) Discipling must be RESTORATIVE, RELEASING and
    EMPOWERING.

132
PERSPECTIVES
  • 1) The goal of discipling is LOVE, not
    INFORMATION.
  • But the goal of our instruction is
love from a pure heart and a good
    conscience and a sincere faith.
  • 1 Timothy 15

133
PERSPECTIVES
  • A discipler views the disciple as UNIQUE and
    PRICELESS.
  • For we are His workmanship, created in Christ
Jesus for good works, which God prepared
beforehand, that we should walk in them.
  • Ephesians 210

134
PERSPECTIVES
  • 3) A discipler is concerned with RIGHTEOUSNESS
    much more than just MORALITY.
  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after
righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
  • Matthew 56

135
PERSPECTIVES
  • 4) INVITATIONS always work better than COMMANDS.
  • Jesus saw a man, called Matthew, sitting in the
tax office and He said to him, Follow me!
And he rose, and followed Him.
  • Matthew 99

136
PERSPECTIVES
  • The only requirement of following Jesus is
    saying, Okay --
  • a positive response!

137
A CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT
  • 1) Being WELCOMED as is and HONORED for their
    unique individuality.

138
A CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT
  • 2) BELIEVING in them more than they believe in
    themselves.
  • TRUSTING them more than they trust themselves.

139
A CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT
  • 3) LOVED unconditionally so they dont need to
FEAR instruction as criticism or disapproval.

140
A CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT
  • 4) Being given SAFE OPPORTUNITIES to hear of
others mistakes and to CONFESS their own faults
    and failures.

141
A CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT
  • 5) Being encouraged into HOPE. They can succeed
against SIN and they can GROW in the Lord.

142
DISCIPLESHIP
  • A DOOR to be opened and a PATH to be followed.

143
DISCIPLESHIP
  • Discipleship is a process,
  • not a performance.
  • Therefore, as Gods chosen people, holy and
dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,
    kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

144
DISCIPLESHIP
  • Bear with each other and forgive whatever
grievances you may have against one another.
Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
  • And over these virtues put on love, which binds
them all together in perfect unity.

145
DISCIPLESHIP
  • Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,
since as members of one body you were called to
    peace. And be thankful.
  • Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you
teach and admonish one another with all wisdom,
and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs
with gratitude in your heart to God.

146
DISCIPLESHIP
  • And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do
it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God the Father through Him.
  • Colossians 3 12 - 17
