5Hosea the Man
- Hoseas name means Salvation
- Quoted in the NT several times
- Mt 215 913 127 Rom 925, 26 1 Cor 1555
1 Pet 25, 10.
6- Matt. 215 Hosea 111 Out of Egypt I called my
son - Matt.913 127 - Hosea 66 For I delight in
loyalty rather than sacrifice, And in the
knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. - I Cor.1555 - Hosea 1314 Shall I ransom them
from the power of Sheol? Shall I redeem them from
death? O Death, where are your thorns? O Sheol,
where is your sting? Compassion will be hidden
from My sight.
7- I Peter 25-10
- Hosea 110 Yet the number of the sons of Israel
Will be like the sand of the sea, Which cannot be
measured or numbered And in the place Where it
is said to them, "You are not My people," It will
be said to them, "You are the sons of the living
God."
8- Hosea 223 "I will sow her for Myself in the
land. I will also have compassion on her who had
not obtained compassion, And I will say to those
who were not My people, 'You are My people!' And
they will say, 'You are my God!'" - Romans 925 As He says also in Hosea, "I WILL
CALL THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, 'MY PEOPLE,'
AND HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, 'BELOVED.'"
9- That is all about the Church! The Bride of
Christ!
10Key to Understanding the Book
Hosea 1-3 Hosea 4-13 Hosea 14
Hoseas Marriage Hoseas Message----------------------------------- Hoseas Message-----------------------------------
Gomers Unfaithfulness Gomers Discipline Gomers Restoration The case of God's covenant lawsuit is set forth, showing how Israel has been an unfaithful bride Ultimate restoration
11Hosea 46
- My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge
because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also
reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me
seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God,
I will also forget thy
children. - Knowledge - law of God (forgotten, rejected)
- Results in destruction of people who once were
Gods people
12- Hosea is prophesying the reasons God will send
Israel into captivity - 1. They slaughtered Ahabs people when God only
pronounced judgment on Ahab and Jezebel and their
false prophets. - 2. Israel now worshiped materialism, other gods,
and pleasure. They forsook the Lord! - 2Ti 34 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers
of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
13- Hos 12 When the LORD first spoke through Hosea,
the LORD said to Hosea, "Go, take to yourself a
wife of harlotry and have children of harlotry
for the land commits flagrant harlotry, forsaking
the LORD." - Forsake fall away from, depart to show ones
backside - Hos 412 For a spirit of harlotry has led them
astray, And they have played the harlot,
departing from their God.
14- 1Ti 41 But the Spirit explicitly says that in
later times some will fall away from the faith,
paying attention to deceitful spirits and
doctrines of demons,
15- Heb 310 "THEREFORE I WAS ANGRY WITH THIS
GENERATION, AND SAID, 'THEY ALWAYS GO ASTRAY IN
THEIR HEART, AND THEY DID NOT KNOW MY WAYS' - Heb 311 AS I SWORE IN MY WRATH, 'THEY SHALL NOT
ENTER MY REST.'"
16- Heb 312 Take care, brethren, that there not be
in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that
falls away from the living God. - Heb 313 But encourage one another day after
day, as long as it is still called "Today," so
that none of you will be hardened by the
deceitfulness of sin.
17- 2Pe 317 You therefore, beloved, knowing this
beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not
carried away by the error of unprincipled men and
fall from your own steadfastness, - 2Pe 318 but grow in the grace and knowledge of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the
glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
18They are like America today
- Hos 41 Listen to the word of the LORD, O sons
of Israel, For the LORD has a case against the
inhabitants of the land, Because there is no
faithfulness or kindness Or knowledge of God in
the land. - Hos 42 There is swearing, deception, murder,
stealing and adultery. They employ violence, so
that bloodshed follows bloodshed.
19- Hos 418 Their liquor gone, They play the harlot
continually Their rulers dearly love shame. - Hos 419 The wind wraps them in its wings, And
they will be ashamed because of their sacrifices.
- Hos 917 My God will cast them away Because they
have not listened to Him And they will be
wanderers among the nations. (70AD 1917)
20True Repentance
- Act 238 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each
of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ
for the forgiveness of your sins and you will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. - Act 319 "Therefore repent and return, so that
your sins may be wiped away, in order that times
of refreshing may come from the presence of the
Lord
21Hosea ends with
- Hos 149 Whoever is wise, let him understand
these things Whoever is discerning, let him know
them. For the ways of the LORD are right, And the
righteous will walk in them, But transgressors
will stumble in them.

23The Knowledge of God
- Hosea challenges Israel to know the Lord.
- Their lives indicated that they didnt know the
Lord (41-3) - Evil actions indicate a lack of experience and
knowledge of God. - They rejected Gods law and prophets
- My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge
(46). - He urged people to press on to the fuller
knowledge of the Lord (63)
24- Hsa 63 "So let us know, let us press on to know
the LORD. His going forth is as certain as the
dawn And He will come to us like the rain, Like
the spring rain watering the earth."
25Yahwehs covenant love in Jesus
- Romans 9 24 even us, whom he also called, not
only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?
25 As he says in Hosea "I will call them my
people' who are not my people and I will call
her my loved one' who is not my loved one," 26
and, "It will happen that in the very place
where it was said to them, You are not my
people,' they will be called sons of the living
God.'"
26In Jesus
- We are chosen to be a people, and called to that
destiny. - We are redeemed from the power of sin and death.
- We are blessed with all things necessary for
life and godliness 2 Peter 13-4
272 Peter 13-4
- 3 His divine power has given us everything we
need for life and godliness through our knowledge
of him who called us by his own glory and
goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his
very great and precious promises, so that through
them you may participate in the divine nature and
escape the corruption in the world caused by evil
desires.
28- The Charge Against Israel
- Against the nation
- ..against you who live in the land There is no
faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God
in the land. (41) - my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge
(46)
29- Against the priests in particular
- The more the priests increased, the more they
sinned against me they exchanged their Glory for
something disgraceful. They feed on the sins of
my people and relish their wickedness. (47,8) - The imminent sentence
- For I will be like a lion to Ephraim, like a
great lion to Judah. I will tear them to pieces
and go away I will carry them off, with no one
to rescue them. (514)
30- Their Appeal Rejected
- The call to repentance
- Let us acknowledge the LORD let us press on to
acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he
will appear he will come to us like the winter
rains, like the spring rains that water the
earth. (63)
31- Rejected because of Israels true condition
- ..Your love is like the morning mist, like the
early dew that disappears. (64) - For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and
acknowledgement of God rather than burnt
offerings. (66)
32Real Repentance
- The Lord presents this problem with the
illustration of dew and a morning fog. They do
not survive the heat of day. - Jesus also spoke about the necessity of enduring
to the end. Endurance is the stuff of real faith.
Saving faith is enduring faith. For this reason
you are called to endure.
33- Jam 123 For if anyone is a hearer of the word
and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his
natural face in a mirror 24 for once he has
looked at himself and gone away, he has
immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.
25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law,
the law of liberty, and abides by it, not
having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual
doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.
34- And this I pray, that your love may abound still
more and more in real knowledge and all
discernment, so that you may approve the things
that are excellent, in order to be sincere and
blameless until the day of Christ (Philippians
19-10).
35Conclusion
- Who is wise? He will realize these things. Who
is discerning? He will understand them. The ways
of the LORD are right the righteous walk in
them, but the rebellious stumble in them. (149)
36What about us?
- Like Israel, I have been richly blessed
- Like Israel, I am expected to remain faithful
- Am I building Gods kingdom or mine?
- Am I growing in the Knowledge of God and walking
in the ways of the LORD? - Or am I playing the unfaithful spouse, flirting
with the world?
37We all Fail God!
- Everyone GOD loves has betrayed Him, forsaken
Him, and been unfaithful to Him. - All we like sheep have gone astray
we have turned every one to his own way
(Isaiah 536 ESV) - for all have sinned and fall short of the glory
of God. (Romans 323 ESV) - I am no better than Gomer, I am no different.
38I have broken GODS heart.
- Through Hoseas experience, GOD is telling His
people that He knows what it is like to suffer
through the pain of infidelity, the anguish of
betrayal, and the hurt of broken promises - GOD knows all there is to know about a broken
heart.
39GOD loves me still!
- Everyone GOD loves has betrayed Him, forsaken
Him, been unfaithful to Him, but He
loves us anyway. - just like the love of the LORD for the children
of Israel (Hosea 31 NKJV) - while we were still sinners, Christ died for
us. (Romans 58 NKJV) - with the precious blood of Christ
(1 Peter 119 NKJV) - Hosea demonstrates how deep GODS love goes for
us.
40His love for me!
- that Christ may dwell in your hearts through
faith that you, being rooted and grounded in
love, - may be able to comprehend with all the saints
what is the width and length and depth and height
- to know the LOVE OF CHRISTwhich passes knowledge
that you may be filled with all the fullness of
God. - Ephesians 317-19 NKJV
41GOD wants me to repent.
- GOD pleads with His people to return to Him.
- So you, by the help of your God, return (35
710 115 126 141) - So I bought her for myself (32)
- If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.
(John 138 NKJV) - Repent therefore and be converted, that your
sins may be blotted out, so that times of
refreshing may come from the presence of the
Lord (Acts 319 NKJV) - Redemption is impossible without repentance!
42Accept His redeeming love!
- I have been crucified with Christ
- it is no longer I who live,
- but Christ lives in me
- and the life which I now live in the flesh
- I live by faith in the Son of God,
- who loved me and gave Himself for me.
- Galatians 220 NKJV
43- I will betroth you to me forever I will betroth
you in righteousness and justice, in love and
compassion. I will betroth you in faithfulness,
and you will acknowledge the LORD (Hosea 219,20)
