Tips for Drawing Lewis Dot Diagrams for Covalent
Bonds (pg 186)

• Step 1 Determine the total of valence e- of
  all atoms
• Step 2 Choose the central atom to be the atom
  with the largest of unpaired e-. Join the
  atoms with single bonds

• Step 3 - Place lone pairs of e- around all atoms
  except the central atom to form an octet (except
  H)
• Step 4 (a) if all valence e- from step 1 have
  not been used, add one or more lone pairs around
  the central atom
• Step 4 (b) if all valence e- have been used up
  but the central atom does not have a full octet
  move one or more of the lone pairs of e- to form
  double or triple bonds.
