• Notation that draws the outer electrons around
  the symbol of an element.

Why?

• Outer-shell electrons determine the reactivity
  and properties of an atom.
• Therefore these electrons are the most important.

How?Well do nitrogen.
5 electrons in outer shell

• 1. Write the symbol of the element
• The symbol of the element represents the nucleus
  and all the electrons EXCEPT those in the outer
  energy level.
• 2. Write the e- configuration.
• 3. Select electrons in the outer level.
• 4. Imagine the symbol being in a box. That box
  has four sides.
• 5. Place a dot around the symbol for each
  electron in the outer level.
• (Be sure to put one dot on each side before
  doubling up.)
