Aim How has nationalism created change?
  • Do Now

3
Nationalism
  • Nationalism is a feeling of pride in and devotion
to ones nation. It is a feeling that develops
among people who may share a common language,
history, set of traditions, or goal.
  • Nationalism can be positive by having people join
together to choose their own form of government,
    and seek independence.
  • Nationalism can also be negative by breaking up
empires, causing racism and the imperialism of
    other nations

4
Bonds of a Nation-State

    but culturally similar lands.

Nationalism can lead to Imperialism
  • All the human culture, all the results of art,
science and technology we see before us today,
are almost exclusively the product of the Aryan
Only an adequate large space on this earth
assures a nation of freedom of existence We must
hold unflinchingly to our aim to secure for the
German people the land and soil to which they are
entitled. If we speak of soil in Europe today,
we can only have in mind Russia
  • ADOLF HITLER (TAKEN FROM MEIN KAMPF)

Jewish population of Europe

Questions About the Chart

Jewish population was not worthy to live side by
side with that of the Aryan race.
  • 1. How did the Jewish population of Europe change
    between 1939 and 1945?
  • 2. What historical event led to the decline in
Jewish population represented in the chart?

16
Nationalism can also lead to independence
movements
  • We believe it is the inalienable right of the
Indian people, as of any other people, to have
freedom and to enjoy the fruits of their toil and
have the necessities of life We also believe
that if any government deprives a people of these
rights and oppresses them, the people have a
further right to alter it or abolish it. The
British Government of India has not only deprived
the Indian people of their freedom but has
exploited the masses, and has ruined India
    economically, politically, culturally and
spiritually. We believe, therefore, that India
must sever (break) the British connection and
attain Purna Swaraj or Complete Independence.
  • - MOHANDAS GANDHI
