The Former Colonies and General Growth

• Not certain how far the continent stretched west,
  most colonies claimed much land in the west.
• Settlers moved west into the territories before
  the land could be considered for statehood.
• Many of these settlers were people of different
  religions, ethnicity, or were in other ways
  uncomfortable living back east.

• The Mississippi River became the boundary on the
  west that was shared with the Spanish and French
  until Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana
  Purchase.
• Kentucky and Tennessee were first considered the
  western sections of existing states, so this
  growth cannot be considered land acquisition

North West Ordinance

• The North West Ordinance was written in 1787 by
  the U.S. when it was still a confederation
• The law specified how the land around the Great
  Lakes would be developed.
• Townships would be created as large squares of
  land, and each would be required to have a public
  elementary school at the center.

• An important feature of the ordinance is that the
  territories could become states through a series
  of steps in population growth.
• This area was part of the U.S.s original
  territory and cannot be considered land
  acquisition.
• These new states would be equal to the old
  states.

Louisiana Purchase

• Since 1795, the U.S. had shipping and storing
  rights in New Orleans.
• Spain ceded its remaining American territory to
  France in a treaty in 1801.

• Napoleon, worried hed have to protect his new
  land, sold it to the United States government for
  15 million dollars in 1803.
• Thomas Jefferson was the president at the time.

Florida

• When the British abandoned Florida, both Spanish
  and American colonists entered.
• America made numerous military trips into
  Florida, which was controlled by Spain.

• Andrew Jackson led one of the campaigns in 1818.
  He later went on to become president.
• The Spanish gave Florida to the United States as
  part of treaty in 1821.

Texas

• Both Americans and Mexicans inhabited Texas in
  the early 1800s.
• Texans, led by Sam Houston, won their
  independence from Mexico in 1836.

• Growing cotton, many Texans owned slaves
• Texas remained the Republic of Texas from 1836
  until 1845, when it was admitted into the U.S.

Oregon Country

• The first Europeans to explore this area were
  French-Canadian fur-trappers.
• The British captured a fort on the coast of what
  is now Washington from the Americans in 1813.

Oregon Country (Continued)

• In the 1830s, missionaries, especially
  Presbyterians and Methodists, came to the area in
  hopes of converting Native Americans.
• An agreement was finally reached with the British
  in 1846 on how the area should be split. It was
  split along the 49th north parallel, which is how
  it is today.

Mexican Cession

• Mexico, upset that Texas had joined the United
  States, declared war on the United States.
• General Zachary Taylor invaded Mexico and took
  several important cities.

• In 1848, after years of being attacked Mexico
  signed a treaty with the United States.
• Mexico was forced to give up what is now
  California, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada

Alaska

• The Russians colonized Alaska before American
  adventurers reached the land.
• By the 1850s, the Russians thought they had found
  as many resources as they would in Alaska, and
  were worried they couldnt protect the colony.

Alaska (continued)

• The United States and Russia signed a treaty of
  sale in 1867, just two years after the end of the
  American Civil War.
• Though gold deposits were discovered by Russians
  earlier in the 1800s, The Yukon Gold Rush began
  in the late 1890s.

of in the earth as it was found in California
