Lewis and Clark
  • Lewis and Clark expedition succeeded in
traversing the northwestern portion of North
America and reaching the Pacific Ocean. The map
reflects the geographical concepts of government
leaders on the eve of the expedition. It is
believed that Lewis and Clark carried this map on
the expedition, at least as far as the
Mandan-Hidasta villages on the Missouri River,

The Era of Good Feelings
  • After the war of 1812 the US had proved itself
equal to a European Nation that was a sign of
Nationalism. That was the reason why the time
period between 1817 and 1825 was called the Era
of Good Feeling. President James Monroe set a new
border between the US and British Canada, and got
Spain to give up claims to West Florida that had
be annexed to give East Florida to the US.

10
Settling Kentucky
  • The Cherokees and Shawnee didnt want to give up
their land, they fought the pioneers. In 1174 the
Virginia militia fought a battle with the Indians
and won. Virginia leaders made Indian leaders
sign a treaty to give up their land in Kentucky.
Soon as the treaty was signed a land developer
hired Daniel Boon to clear a road to Kentucky.
In March 1775 Boon lead a group through the
Cumberland gap. This path became know as the
    wilderness road.

Pioneer Life
  • Life as a Pioneer was very hard the families
after they had to buy the land they had to clear
the forest in order to build their homes. They
had to become self sufficient very quickly or
they could not survive. They traded with Indians
and banded together to protect themselves and
built log houses with tall fences all around.

12
Tecumseh and The Prophet
  • Tecumseh was the leader of the Indians and he
dreamed of forming a strong confederation. He went
from tribe to tribe with his brother Tenskwatawa
who was know as the prophet. Tecumseh wanted the
tribes to unite against the Americans trying to
    settle the land.

Zeblun Pike
Zebulon Pike lead a small group of pathfinders to
explore the southwestern part of Louisiana. They
followed the Arkansas River through the new
land.By the winter of 1806 he had reached the
great prairie. Pike described that he saw an Blue
