Start with a paragraph.

• Brainstorm your topic or question.
• Example Write a paragraph about your favorite
  movie . Explain why it is your favorite.

Next list your reasons why you like this movie

• 1.The actors are among my favorites.
• 2. The storyline is romantic and fun.
• 3. I like to see the New York scenery.

How to set up your paragraph

• You need 3 reasons because they are to be your
  supporting details.
• Later, you may want to write an essay on this
  topic, and you can easily write a five paragraph
  essay. At that point, this paragraph would be
  your opening.

Topic Sentence

• In this paragraph, you will state your main
  idea first. This will be your topic sentence. It
  can appear anywhere in the paragraph, but this is
  the easiest way to begin for a novice. That way
  the reader will know immediately that you are
  writing about your favorite movie.
• My favorite movie is Youve Got Mail.

Completing the paragraph

• Now that you have your topic sentence written,
  you need to write your supporting details.
• My favorite movie is Youve Got Mail.
  I really like the three main characters in this
  movie Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and Greg Kinnear.
  This movie is romantic and very funny. I also
  enjoy seeing the New York scenery.

• This completes a paragraph about the
  authors favorite movie. There is a topic
  sentence that tells the main idea. There are
  also supporting details. Later, this paragraph
  could become the opening paragraph to an essay.
  The supporting details would be elaborated on in
  their own separate paragraphs. The fifth
  paragraph would be the closing. Now watch the
