Pregnant Pakistani woman stoned to death by her
family members
2
Islamabad, Pakistan -- Relatives of a pregnant
woman beat her to death with bricks near a court
building in eastern Pakistan after she married a
man against their will. Farzana Parveen, 25, was
attacked Tuesday close to the high court in
Lahore by a group of about 20 people, including
her brothers, father and cousin. One family
member made a noose of rough cloth around her
neck while her brothers smashed bricks into her
skull. What had Parveen done to provoke such a
brutal attack? Police officials said she had
refused to wed the cousin whom her family had
selected for her, choosing instead to elope with
a widower named Mohammad Iqbal. The family had
challenged her marriage to Iqbal in the courts,
accusing him of abducting her. The attack took
place as Parveen was on her way from her lawyer's
office headed to the high court in Lahore, where
she was expected to make a declaration that she
had married Iqbal of her own volition. So-called
honor killings often originate from tribal
traditions in Pakistan, but are not a part of
Islam. Although they're common in rural areas,
Tuesday's attack in a public area of a big city
was unusual. Memorial Day can all too easily
mark the start of grilling season and retail
sales events instead of fulfilling its original
purpose, honoring those who lost their lives in
service to our country. Congress made the holiday
official in 1971, but the practice dates back to
the 1860s, when it was known as Decoration Day,
an occasion for decorating the graves of Civil
War soldiers. Late May was chosen (always the
last Monday of May each year), historians say,
because flowers would be in bloom throughout the
country. It was only after World War I that
Decoration Day was extended to commemorate the
dead from all U.S. battles. Monday we'll remember
those soldiers, especially the most recent
casualties. Since 2003, according to the
Department of Defense, more than 6,800 men and
women in the U.S. armed forces have died in the
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  • You may still need your Whole Paycheck to shop at
organic food giant Whole Foods. But you only need
a fraction of it to buy the stock. Whole Foods is
the worst performer in the SP 500 this year.
Shares are down nearly 35. Why is the stock
doing so poorly? Competition from larger
retailers is eating into Whole Foods' earnings.
The organic market chain's recent troubles began
back in November. It's not as if customers have
abandoned healthy eating. Quinoa, kale and tofu
are still hot. It's just that consumers can get
their organic fix ... often for much lower prices
... at places like Wal-Mart, Kroger, Costco and
    privately held Trader Joe's.
