MicroscopeWindows to the World of the Cell
2
Microscopes
  • An instrument used observe minute objects
  • Enlarges images of small objects

3
History
  • The 1st compound microscope was built by Jansen
    and Lippehey in 1590

4
History
  • In the 1660s Leeuwenhoek (father of microscopy)
made a simple microscope and started to observe
    live specimens

5
Types of Microscope
  • Light uses light and lenses to magnify image
  • Electron uses magnets and electrons to magnify
    image

7
Compound Microscope
  • Can magnify images up to 1000x
  • Made up of
  • Mechanical System
  • Optical System
  • Light System

8
Mechanical System
  • Holds specimen
  • Allows one to focus
  • Parts
  • Stage/clips
  • Focusing knobs
  • Body of the microscope

9
Optical System
  • Made of two lenses
  • Objective Lens
  • Eyepiece
  • Both together produce the magnified image

10
Light System
  • Light source (mirror) illuminates object
  • Diaphragm allows to control amount of light

11
Parts of a Microscope
12
Magnification
  • The ability to make objects look larger

13
Magnification
  • To calculate
  • Power of objective lens x Power of Eyepiece
  • Do these calculations
  • Eyepiece 10x
  • Objective 10x 40x 100x

14
Electron Microscope
15
Electron Microscope
  • Uses magnets and electrons to magnify images
  • Magnifies 1000x better than a light microscope
  • Specimen cannot be living

16
Types of Electron Microscopes
  • Transmission Electron Microscope
  • Internal structures

Human Cell
17
Types of Electron Microscopes
  • Scanning Electron Microscope
  • surface structures

Microscope Sketching rules

20
When sketching a specimen you should
  1. use a sharp, hard pencil no pen
  2. show details of one part of the viewing area
  3. Draw specimen the same size as it appears

21
  1. List labels outside the drawing area.
  2. Print neatly.
  3. List magnification
  4. Use colored pencils to indicate the color of the
    specimen
  5. BE NEAT!!!
