A short intro to CGIL
  • CGIL, the Italian General Confederation of
    Labour, is
  • the oldest Italian union (founded in 1908)
  • the most representative, about 6 million people
    membership (workers and pensioners)
  • with a double structure 13 workers federations
    and 134 regional and local sections (camere del
    lavoro) all over Italy.
  • In 2009 a Youth Policies Department was created
    at national level in order to raise awareness
    about youth policies in our country and also at
    regional level and in many National Workers
    Federation (including FP, the National Federation
    of Public Workers).

  • The Youth Department of the CGIL
  • works with the National secretary in charge of
    Youth Policies
  • organises events and initiatives about the youth
    condition in Italy and about the labour market
  • collaborates with the different Federations on
    the implementation of specific strategies in this
    field
  • launched a Youth campaign in order to raise
    awareness about the condition of young people in
    the labour market
  • meets once a year in a National Gathering and
    several times a year in specific meetings with
    all youth representatives at local level.

  • The principal activity of the Youth Department
    was the launch of the Campaign NON
  • Giovani Non Più Disposti a Tutto
  • (young people not anymore ready for everything)
  • The main message of the title of this campaign is
    to underline that young people should not be
    ready anymore to accept the humiliating
    conditions to access the labour market and the
    precarious jobs that are offered to them and
    which do not allow them to build their own
    present and future.
  • The campaign was addressed not only to CGIL
    itself and its representatives and delegates at
    all various levels in order to increase awareness
    inside the confederation, but also to the general
    public.

  • 1st National Youth Gathering
  • Santa Impazienza
  • Tuscany, July 2010
  • The title of the first national gathering of the
    youth department of CGIL was Saint Impatience!
    Work and rights now!.
  • In Italian the expression Saint Patience is an
    exclamation inviting to be patient. By the slogan
    Santa Impazienza we meant the impatience of young
    people in our country to have decent work and
    life conditions now.
  • The gathering was attended by young workers,
    delegates, youth policies representatives,
    students organizations who daily collaborate with
    CGIL.
  • Workshops and debates with external guests have
    taken place and a final report was produced after
    the event.

LAUNCH OF THE CAMPAIGN ROME , NOVEMBER 2010
  • In the first phase the website www.giovanidisposti
    atutto.com was launched and anonymous indecent
    jobs advertising were published.
  • Job ads were disseminated on the web and also as
    street posters.
  • 3. In the following days the NON symbol was
    stuck to the posters for the second phase of the
    campaign. The objective is to say that young
    people are not accepting such jobs anymore!
  • 4. The new website www.nonpiu.it is launched and
    the campaign unveiled. Thousands of comments are
    posted on the wall of the website.

  • Financial Group searches MBA graduates available
    to prepare coffee and dog-sit for their boss.
  • Leading company in consumption goods searches for
    good-looking female graduates available to get
    consumed.

  • Advertising Agency searches for junior account
    with parents ready to support him financially
    lifelong.
  • Computer Group searches for recent graduates with
    honours, but without dignity.

PRESENTATION OF THE CAMPAIGN
  • A flash mob was organised in front of the
    Parliament and a press conference with CGIL
    Secretary General unveiled that the campaign
    organisers was the Youth Policies Department of
    CGIL.

NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION IN ROME - 2010
The Youth representatives of CGIL participated in
the national rally in Rome on November 27, 2010.
The title of the demonstration was Future
belongs to young people and work and was
organised by CGIL in order to raise awareness
about youth unemployment and the absence of a
political strategy to tackle it.

PRECARIOUS SANTA DECEMBER 2010
  • In December 2010 the youth delegates of CGIL
    disguised as Santa Claus distributed leaflets in
    the most crowded shopping streets in Italy in
    order to raise awareness about job exploitation
    of sales assistants in that particular period.

  • A specific campaign on internships/traineeships
    was launched in order to prevent illegal use of
    internships.
  • Ironic ads were posted on the web and appeared
    simultaneously on the walls of
  • 14 different locations in the whole country
  • Big supermarket offers
  • unpaid one-year internships for interns ready to
    collect nothing
  • Prestigious theaters search for
  • trainees with priceless ideas,
  • and others

COMMITTEE AGAINST PRECARIOUS JOBS AND
DEMONSTRATION 9 APRIL 2011
  • The Youth Policies Dept. of CGIL becomes a member
    of a national committee against precarious
    condition of life and work. the members of this
    Committee are youth groups of political parties,
    students, free-lance workers associations, and
    interns associations.

The national demonstration Our time is now. Life
wont wait on April 9, 2011. Thousands of young
people participate in the events throughout the
country.

GENERAL STRIKES MAY AND SEPTEMBER
  • The youth policies groups in all regions
    continued working together and organised the
    participation of young workers in the two general
    strikes against the policies of the government in
    terms of crisis which took place on May 6 and
    September 6 2011.

2 NATIONAL GATHERING OUR TIME IS NOW TUSCANY
- JULY 2011
The gathering was attended by young workers,
delegates, youth policies representatives,
students organizations who daily collaborate with
CGIL and took place in Pisa in July 2011. A
debate with young leaders from Egypt, Tunisia,
Spain and Italy was organized in order to share
the different mobilizations that were taking
place at that time in the Mediterranean area
(indignados, Maghreb and Mashreq youth
representatives). Representatives of the 9
April Committee participated in the event in
order to keep collaborating with these
associations.

NATIONAL DEMOSTRATION OF PUBLIC WORKERS ROME 8
OCTOBER 2011
  • After the general strike, the public workers
    federations of CGIL (FP and FLC - school and
    universities workers) organized a demonstration
    in Rome to fight against the austerity measures
    of the government which were approved by the
    Parliament with budgetary cuts to the public
    sectors.
  • Before the day of the demonstration a specific
    campaign aimed at precarious workers in the
    public sector was launched. Precarious workers
    are the main victims of austerity measures in the
    funding to public service and in particular
    cutting precarious jobs.
  • The slogans of the campaign focused on the pride
    of being public workers, even though on a
    temporary basis. The State is myself! The
    contribution of precarious workers ensured the
    existence and functioning of public services in
    many sectors, including education.

  • The campaign Rights. No more words against
    precarious jobs was launched with a flash mob.
  • Amateur cooks offered people dishes full of the
    worst clichés about work and young people.
  • We wanted to show our disapproval against
    rhetoric on young people and on precarious jobs.
  • Precarious jobs wont be defeated with rhetoric
    but with
  • Social security
  • Rights
  • Trade union rights
  • Collective agreements.
  • After the launch of the campaign CGIL youth
    departments organised meetings to present and
    discuss the proposals of CGIL to overcome
    precarious jobs and other initiatives in many
    Italian cities.

WE ARE THE GUARANTEE!CAMPAIGN ON THE YOUTH
GUARANTEE
  • CGIL launched a specific campaign for the
    implementation of the Youth guarantee in Italy.
  • The campaign was launched with a petition which
    could be signed on a web platform and put forward
    its own proposal for the implementation of the
    measures at national level.
