Feminism
In the 1960s feminism (the belief that
women and men are equal in abilities and should
have equal rights and opportunities) became the
subject of intense debate when the womens
liberation movement encouraged women to reject
their traditional supporting role and to demand
equal status and equal rights with men in areas
such as employment and pay. Since then the
gender gap between the sexes has been reduced.
However, the battle between feminist and
traditional views of a womans role continues. It
is widely accepted by younger people that women
should, if they wish, be allowed to develop their
careers and not give up work when they have a
family.

Feminism has brought about many changes in
the English language. Many words for job titles
that included man have been replaced, for
example police officer is used instead of
policeman and chairperson for chairman.
He is now rarely used to refer to a person when
the person could be either a man or a woman. The
title Ms is used for women instead of Miss or
Mrs, since it does not show whether a woman is
married or not.

The Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge, built in 1883, spans the
East River in New York City. The bridge connects
the densely populated boroughs of Brooklyn and
Manhattan. The bridge was designed by the
American engineer John Augustus Roebling, and
construction was begun in 1869 by his son
Washington Augustus Roebling. When the Brooklyn
Bridge was opened for use on May 24, 1883, it was
the longest suspension bridge in the world. The
main suspension span is 486m (1595ft) long the
average height above the river is 41m (133ft)
and the overall length is 2065m (6775ft).
Numerous techniques devised by Roebling made this
bridge possible, including the use of caissons
(watertight chambers) for building the bridges
stone towers and of steel wire for the cables. To
allow tall-masted sailing ships to pass under

bridge, Roebling positioned the road deck 36.6m
(120ft) above the water. Stone towers, which rose
to a height of 84.3m (276.5ft), made this high
roadway possible and made the bridge the tallest
structure in New York at its completion. The span
from tower to tower of just over 486m (1,595ft)
and the span between cable anchors of 1,054m
(3,456ft) constituted a remarkable achievement.
The Brooklyn Bridge in New York City perhaps best
demonstrates the scale of building made possible
by the rapid expansion of American industry and
by American ambition. The expression selling the
Brooklyn Bridge to somebody means tricking
somebody in a deal.

It is a transitional state both
physically and culturally. It varies from the
wooded mountains of the more humid east to the
sparse and dry country of the western plains. The
changing landscape of Oklahoma is reflected in
its economic activities, which range from the
raising of wheat in western and central areas to
the lumbering that is carried on in the Ouachita
Mountains in the southeastern part of the state.

The Origin of Its Name
The name Oklahoma was derived by
combining the Choctaw words for red and
people. Part of the states area had been
originally put aside for settlement of Native
Americans and was known as Indian Territory. The
other section of the state, Oklahoma Territory,
was gradually opened for white settlement toward
the end of the 19th century. Oklahoma earned its
nickname, the Sooner State, from the fact that
some land-hungry settlers, known as the Sooners,
jumped the starting gun that was to open one
section of the territory to settlers and rushed
in to take land before they were legally entitled
to do so.

Oklahoma was admitted to the Union on
November 16, 1907, as the 46th state. Resulting
from the combination of Indian and Oklahoma
territories, the state retains marked features of
its Native American heritage in the makeup of its

The University of Oklahoma is a public
coeducational institution of higher education in
Norman, Oklahoma, with branch campuses in

whose rich, dense verse was a powerful influence
on succeeding English poets, and whose prose was
devoted to the defense of civil and religious
liberty. Milton is often considered the greatest
English poet after Shakespeare. The epic poem
Paradise Lost (1667), Miltons masterpiece and
one of the greatest poems in world literature,
dramatizes the Biblical account of humanitys

In this enlightened age, there still exist a
certain number of men who view women as
second-class citizens. They go on maintaining the
fiction that women, who are inferior, unreliable
and irrational, depend too little on cool
reasoning and too much on intuition to arrive at
decisions. Hence, men almost entirely control
top-level negotiations between countries,
businesses and banks. Nevertheless, women
have shown their excellence and superiority in
any job you care to name. As farmers, workers,
drivers, doctors, politicians and scientists and
even presidents of countries they have often put
men to shame. They are so conscientious,
industrious and persevering that they frequently
succeed brilliantly in all walks of life in
addition to bearing and rearing children.
Although the hard-fought battle for recognition
that women are equal and often superior to men in
almost every field has been won, it is by no
means over. Further effort should be exerted to
convert some mens contemptuous and hostile
attitude towards women. The world can grow more
peaceful and flourishing only by consummate
hand-in-hand cooperation of men and women.

IM GOING TO BUY THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE
Not long ago I received an alumni bulletin
from my college. It included a brief item about a
former classmate Kate L. teaches part-time at
the University of Oklahoma and is assistant
principal at County High School. In her
spare time she is finishing her doctoral
dissertation and the final drafts of two books,
and she still has time for tennis and horse
riding with her daughters. Four words in that
description undid me in her spare time. A friend
said that if I believed everything in the report,
she had a bridge in Brooklyn shed like to sell
me.

My friends joke hit home. What an idiot
Id been! I resolved to stop thinking about
Kates incredible accomplishments and to be
suitably skeptical of such stories in the
future. But like a dieter who devours a
whole box of cookies in a moment of weakness, I
found my resolve slipping occasionally. In weak
moments Id comb the pages of newspapers and
magazines and consume success stories by the
pound. My favorite superwomen included a

two-year-old and a newborn while finishing law
