Title: Pronouns

1
Pronouns
  • Yo (I)
  • Tú (You-informal)
  • Él / Ella (He / She)

2
First things to remember
  • Tú - informal you-it has an accent
  • Él - He - also has an accent
  • Get in the habit of putting these pronouns in
    this order

Yo Tú Él / Ella
3
To conjugate NECESITAR (to need)
  • Yo necesito I need
  • Tú necesitas You need
  • Él / Ella necesita He/She needs

4
Hey, howd you do that?
  • Well, for verbs that end in -AR like Necesitar
  • Its kind of like a math problem using
    subtraction and addition.
  • First we have to subtract the -AR and then we are
left with the stem or necesit-.
  • Now we have to add the ending and it has to match
the subject pronoun of the sentence.

5
-AR verb endings
  • The endings for regular -AR verbs
  • Yo -o
  • Tú -as
  • Él / Ella -a

6
Using mathYo (I)
  • Yo necesitar
  • - (minus) ar
  • Yo necesit-
  • (plus) o
  • Yo necesito (I need)

7
Using mathTú (you, informal)
  • Tú necesitar
  • - (minus) ar
  • Tú necesit-
  • (plus) as
  • Tú necesitas (You need)

8
Using mathÉl / Ella (He / She)
  • Él / Ella necesitar
  • - (minus) ar
  • Él / Ella necesit-
  • (plus) a
  • Él / Ella necesita (He/She needs)

9
Here it is again
  • Yo necesito I need
  • Tú necesitas You need
  • Él / Ella necesita He/She needs

10
To conjugate QUERER (to want)
  • Yo quiero I want
  • Tú quieres You want
  • Él / Ella quiere He/She wants

11
Yeah, but QUERER looks different
  • Thats because QUERER is an irregular verb. Its
called a stem changing -ER verb. The E in the
    first syllable changes to IE.
  • Drop the -ER ending, change the stem to QUIER-
  • Then add the endings for -ER verbs.

12
-ER verb endings
  • Yo -o
  • Tú -es
  • Él / Ella -e

13
Using mathYo (I)
  • Yo querer
  • - (minus) er
  • Yo quer-
  • Change quer- to quier-
  • (plus) o
  • Yo quiero (I want)

14
Using mathTú (You)
  • Tú querer
  • - (minus) er
  • Tú quer-
  • Change quer- to quier-
  • es
  • Tú quieres (You want)

15
Using mathÉl / Ella (He / She)
  • Él / Ella querer
  • - (minus) er
  • Él / Ella quer-
  • Change quer- to quier-
  • (plus) e
  • Él / Ella quiere (He/She wants)

16
Together
  • NECESITAR
  • Yo necesito
  • (I need)
  • Tú necesitas
  • (You need)
  • Él/Ella necesita
  • (He/She needs)
  • QUERER
  • Yo quiero

  • Tú quieres
  • (You want)
  • Él/Ella quiere
  • (He/She wants)

17
Not done yet
  • This chapter has a bunch of new verbs-poner,
    encontrar, ir, conocer, comprar.
  • You can add these verbs AFTER conjugating
NECESITAR or QUERER to say that you need or want
    TO DO something.

18
Two verbs together
  • Yo necesito poner la ropa en el armario. Can you
    translate this?
  • Tú quieres comprar muchas cosas.
  • Can you translate this?
  • Ella quieres ir al centro comercial. Can you
    translate this?

19
Tips
  • Only conjugate the first verb at this point.
  • The second verb is not conjugated and is called
an infinitive verb. In this form, it means to
    something.

20
New infinitive verbs
  • Poner - to put to place
  • Encontrar - to find
  • Organizar - to organize
  • Conocer - to get to know (someone)
  • Hacer - to do to make
  • Comprar - to buy
  • Ir - to go

21
One more thing
  • If you put a question mark in front and behind a
    statement, it becomes a question.
  • Example Quieres una lámpara?
  • (Do you want a lamp?)
  • Necesita él un cuaderno?-Does he need a notebook?

22
No question mark
  • Without the question marks, its simply a
    statement.
  • Example
  • Quieres una lámpara. You want a lamp.
  • Él necesita un cuaderno. He needs a notebook.

23
Preguntas?
  • Questions?
  • Concerns?
  • Comments?
  • Lets see how you do
