Building and Use
Heating Cooling System (cont.)
Heat Pump
Fan Coils Coadis 2 fancoil units, also
manufactured by CIAT, were selected due to their
high heat-exchanger efficiency, high performance
of the fan and high efficiency of the brushless
permanent magnet motor with variable speed
control.

Thermal Storage
The building is heated and cooled using the
ground source heat pump prototype developed by
CIAT for the Ground-Med project. CIAT HP

A latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) will
be coupled to the GSHP. This will help reduce the
electricity costs taking advantage of variable
electricity rates while helping the grid to
overcome the intermittent output of renewable
energy The storage unit will consist of a tank,
with a total volume of 3m3 filled with 400
containers of a Phase Changing Material (PCM)
resulting in a storage capacity of 100kWh. The
selected PCM is a hydrated salt (sodium
thiosulfate pentahydrate) with a melting point of
46ºC and a heat of fusion of 190kJ/kg.

This building is located in Coimbra of Portugal
and concerns an old milling factory which was
recently renovated and transformed into an
administration building. This building is now

Heating Cooling System
  • Water temperature conditions
  • Cooling (In/Out) 15 / 10 oC
  • Heating (In/Out) 35 / 40 oC
  • Hydraulic Loop Description
  • This loop pumps the fluid to the fan coil units
and comprises the Thermal Energy Storage tank and
hydraulic circuit. It is basically composed by
    the following elements
  • Very high efficiency circulating pumps
  • Monitoring elements temperature-, flow-,
  • pressure meters
  • Thermal storage tank 3,000 l tank
  • Buffer tank
  • Valves, filters, etc.
  • A simplified schematic of the loop is shown
    below
