J.JAMESON
  • On October 5th 1740, John Jameson was born.
Somebody believes John Jameson was Irish, but he
    was Scottish.
  • The Jameson family motto is Sine Metu meaning
Without Fear, awarded for their bravery in
battling pirates on the high seas back in the
    1500
  • Now, Ireland is reputed to be where whiskey was
invented and whiskey from Dublin was regarded as
    the finest in the world.

  • In the late 18th century, most whiskeys were
distilled twice, like it is in Scotland. John
Jameson wasnt, he went that extra step and
insisted on triple distillation, as he found that
it made his whiskey twice as smooth.
  • He tried to distil four or five times for a
better taste but it turned out triple
distillation is the best. He was a hardworking
man, he spend all that time to the making of
    whiskey.
  • He was single-minded about quality he actually
set up a Single Distillery to make his whiskey.
This simply means that everything from the
selection of grain and cask, to triple
distillation and maturation, takes places in the
one Distillery to ensure total quality control.

  • When John Jameson a Scottish buisnessman acquired
the Bow Street Distillery in 1780 it was
    producing about 30,000 gallons annually.
  • By the turn of the century it was the second
largest producer in Ireland and one of the
largest in the world producing a million gallons
    annually.
  • Dublin at the time was the epicentre of world
whiskey production.Today Jameson is the third
largest Single Distillery Whiskey in the world.

  • The temperance movement in Ireland had an
enormous impact domestically but the two key
events that affected Jameson internationally were
the Irish war of Independence and subsequent
trade war with the British which denied Jameson
the export markets of the Commonwealth, and
    shortly thereafter, the introduction of
    prohibition in the United States.

  • It was also a fact that the introduction of basic
grain whiskey production using column stills by
the Scottish blenders in the mid 1800's enabled
them to produce vast amounts of almost neutral
flavoured components for blending with some malt
    whiskey.
  • This enabled them to create low cost blends that
the Irish, still using the original Pure Pot
Still technique could not compete with. This
differing opinion of what a true whiskey
consisted of culminated in a legal enquiry in
    1908.
  • He stretched to select personally the barley and
casks. John Jameson opened his distillery in
Dublin in 1780. When John Jameson established his
whiskey distillery in Dublin, he really began to
    make his mark.

  • From 1800, John started the tradition of giving
all his workers nicknames. By 1810, Johns son,
John II, had expanded the distillery to be one of
the largest distilling companies in Ireland.
  • In the late 1800s his son, John III expanded the
business globally to make it one of the largest
    whiskeys in the world.
  • However by the time his son, John IV, took over
the distillery in the early 1900s, there wasnt
much for him to do at all except prove the old
adage that good things come in threes.
  • Nowadays, Jameson produces the whisky at two
distilleries the Bushmills distilleries and the
    modern Middleton complex near Cork.
