Title: Europeana

1
Europeana Digital Humanities ?
  • Antoine Isaac

2
Europeana a high-level vision
  • Better serving our already identified audience
  • Including researchers, students
  • Contextualized objects and data to build
    innovative, more sophisticated tools (scholarly
    inference?)
  • Reaching new audiences
  • When people use data to create things like APIs
and Mashups, they put your content in new places.

3
Facilitating access to digitized objects
  • Helping users to find relevant objects
  • On our portal or via general search engines like
    Google
  • Trying to reach users where they are (fitting
    their workflow)
  • Provide APIs, search widgets to be included in
    others websites
  • Pointing to digitized representations on
    providers sites
  • Which can be viewed or exploited by computer
    means
  • Reminder the only data Europeana has is metadata

4
Positioning Europeana as a reference hub for
cultural objects
  • Unified access
  • One single site for users
  • Unified data access points (API, linked data)
  • Using the same model and protocols for 15M
    objects coming from 1500 providers
  • Authoritative access
  • Integrating relevant objects
  • Integrating reference data

5
Facilitating re-use of object and their data
  • Object citation
  • Towards stable identifiers for millions of
    objects
  • Europeana objects can be referred to by external
    data publishers
  • E.g., a research paper being about an object in
    Europeana
  • Data re-use
  • Making re-use technically easy API, linked data
  • Making data open
  • Target data consumers wanting (contextualized)
    data relevant for their activities

6
Note bringing value for Europeana providers
  • Getting more traffic to their site
  • More visibility for their objects
  • More re-use of the data they curate
  • More influence over data on their objects

7
Note bringing value for everyone?
  • 1. Everyone can re-use Europeana data instead of
    creating it
  • E.g., data for scientific papers doesnt have to
re-define data for an object for which Europeana
    provides it already
  • 2. Europeana can re-use others data which it or
    its providers cannot produce
  • Embedding citations to other reference resources
  • Exploit reference data for better object
    accessthesauri, gazetteers

8
Work in progress
  • More flexible, richer data model EDM
  • More open data
  • Ensuring better data quality integrating and
    enriching
  • Provide more/better services

9

Now what?
  • We can provide access to a lot of stuff
  • Weve got a vision, and were really committed to
    it
  • But what should Europeana do, really?
  • Were not real problem owners you are!

17
Can anyone provide use cases?
  • We keep in mind that variety comes at a price
    heterogeneity
  • Our services cant be as specific as the ones of,
    say, TEL
  • See coming talk
  • But even just serving data and references can be
    an art
  • Interfaces, models
  • How about integration and enriching?
  • We need to know more on requirements which could
    impact our job

18
Example of concrete questions
  • Content sourcing
  • Which providers to focus on?
  • Interoperability
  • Which metadata profile(s) should Europeana be
    aligned with?
  • Which dissemination channels for exporting our
    data?
  • Data curation
  • What reference data to link to?
  • Vocabularies, object data sets
  • Collaboration in the DH field
  • THATCamps? Digging into Data Challenge?
