Photo voice
  • Uses photography to represent the interests of
community members who normally may not have a
    voice
  • Empowers community members to be the
    photographers
  • Benefits communities by
  • providing an outlet for expressing local
    knowledge
  • teaching community members a new skill set

4
Creating photographs composition
  • How to set up the subject in the frame
  • Composition communicates meaning
  • Placing subjects with intention and purpose
  • Involves working with
  • light
  • camera angle
  • lens

5
Creating photographs The Rule of Thirds
  • Imagine dividing an image into thirds
    horizontally and vertically
  • Image is made up of nine squares
  • Place points of interest
  • in the intersections
  • along the lines
  • What are the points of interest?
  • Where am I intentionally placing them?

6
Content
  • Conventions of composition
  • Subjects should be facing the camera.
  • Subjects should be filling the picture (objects
should not be too far away).
  • Subjects should be framed within the picture.

7
Content headroom
  • The space between the top of someones head and
    the top of the frame

8
Content nose room
  • The distance between the nose of the subject and
    the edge of the frame
  • Used for close-up, profile shots
  • Space in direction nose is pointing should be
greater than space behind the head

9
Types of shotsextreme close-up
  • Shooting something very close up (e.g. a flower,
    someones eye)
  • Can make objects seem unnatural
  • Helps audience become intimate with subject

10
Types of shots close-up
  • Often used to capture a full face
  • Used to make characters recognisable

11
Types of shotsmedium close-up
  • Very common shot
  • Often of the head and shoulders
  • Good for photographing an individual

12
Types of shots medium shot
  • Shows most of the body, which fills the frame
  • Also good for photographing individuals

13
Types of shots long shot
  • Used often
  • Used when there is more than one individual or
subject that is the focus of attention

14
Types of shotsextreme long shot
  • Used mainly for panoramas
  • Details are difficult to distinguish
  • Good for shooting the natural environment

15
Types of shotshigh-angle shots
  • The camera is positioned above the subject,
    looking downward
  • Can insinuate that the subject is small or
    inferior

16
Types of shotslow-angle shots
  • The camera is positioned below the subject,
    looking upwards
  • Can confer respect or accentuate grandeur

17
Types of shotseye-level shots
  • The camera is positioned level with the subject
  • Used to imply equanimity

18
Working with light low lighting
  • May seem light enough, when it is actually too
    dark for the camera
  • Using a flash can create a glare
  • To take a picture in low light
  • put camera on a tripod
  • keep it very still
  • decrease shutter speed
  • increase ISO settings

19
Working with light bright light
  • Very bright light, such as the sun, can cause the
    photo to look washed out
  • Be aware of shadows, particularly outdoors on
    bright days
