  • Discuss why it is important to stop and think
    about possible consequences before making
    decisions.

  • How many decisions do you think you have made so
    far today?

Possibly hundreds. Sixth graders make decisions
all day long. What are some things you make
decisions about? At home? At school? After
school?
We are going to do an activity now to see to see
how quickly you can make decisions.

I want you to make your decision as quickly as
you can, without looking at or talking to anyone
else.
QUICK DECISIONS
I am going to give you two choices. If you would
choose the first one, take one step to the right.
If you would choose the second one, take one
step to the left.

Which of these would you choose?
  • go out to a movie or rent a DVD?
  • do math or reading?
  • eat ice cream or cake?
  • earn money or spend money?
  • receive a surprise gift or one you picked out?
  • have a kitten or a puppy?
  • eat pizza or a hamburger?
  • visit a friends house or have a friend come to
    your house?
  • go to a football game or a basketball game?

  • The choices you made were easy, because they
    didnt have major consequences. You made those
    decisions quickly, in a few seconds, without much
    thought.
  • You didnt have to stop and think about what
    could happen if you ate ice cream or cake.
    Unless you are allergic to ice cream that
    decision has no major consequences.
  • What are consequences?

Consequences are the results of the choices you
make. You make a decision, which causes one or
more consequences to happen. For example, if you
dont set your alarm clock what might happen?
  • Many people make all their choices the way you
    just made those- QUICKLY, without stopping to
    think.

Consider the Consequences
  • Some decisions do have major consequences.
  • Turn to workbook page 3. Im going to put you in
    pairs now to think about some choices and
    consequences.
  • With your partner, read your assigned scenario
    and list three possible consequences.
  • Look at the first situation. Janet made a quick
    decision without considering the consequences.
    She did not stop to think. To show you what the
    consequences of Janets choice really were, I
    will need four volunteers who like to act

  • Look at the second situation, Joses Choice.
  • Were going to act out the real-life consequences
    of Joses choice now.
  • Ill need four more volunteers who like to act.

  • Janet and Jose got in big trouble because they
    made quick decisions without stopping to think
    about what the consequences might be.

Now lets hear Ricks Rick was at his friends
house after school. He found a gun in a drawer.
He picked up the gun, pointed it at his friend
and said, Hands up! Youre under arrest!
List the consequences of Ricks choice on your
Consider the Consequences worksheet.

Heres the rest of Ricks story-His friend tried
to take the gun from Rick to put it back in the
drawer. The gun went off and killed his friend.
  • Look at the lower right hand corner of your
  • Consider the Consequences worksheet. If you
    see a bullet there stand up.

Thats how many people die in America every day
because someone didnt stop and think. Twelve
people die everyday. Who would have thought that
playing around would be a life or death decision?

  • Obviously, Rick didnt think about the
    consequences when he picked up the gun.

Jose didnt consider the consequences when he
took the joint in his hand.
Janet didnt think about the consequences when
she reached for the money in the convenience store
The same kind of things can happen to anyone
who doesnt stop and think.

  • You may be on the spot. You may have to act
    fast and make an instant decision. You may not
    have time to list all the possible consequences.
  • Can you think of anything that would help you
    make the right decision at a time like that?

Plan Ahead
  • On your handout there is a message that can help
    you.
  • The message is in code. Here is a clue.

STOP AND THINK. PLAN AHEAD
  • Stop and think. Plan ahead. This is what you
    have just done. If Janet, Jose and Rick had done
    that, maybe the outcome would have been different.
  • How do you think planning ahead will help you
    make good decisions?

  • It is important to think about consequences in
    advance, before you find yourself in a tight spot.
  • Raise your hand and name a decision that can have
    major consequences- one that you should stop and
    think about, and plan a good decision for- before
    youre on the spot

  • Using drugs can have big consequences. What are
    some consequences of using drugs?
  • By stopping to think about choices and
    consequences, you can save yourself, your friends
    and family members a lot of trouble in the
    future. Next week, next month or next year, a
    situation may come up, and youll have to make a
    quick decision. For example, youll be at a
    party, and someone may hand you a beer or a
    cigarette. Youll be ready to act out the best
    plan.
