7 Michigan Model Family Life Curriculum (Sample
Letter) (Date) Dear Parents Your child is
about to begin, or may have already begun, a
period of rapid growth called puberty. Many
children wonder if they are normal as they notice
themselves and their friends going through
physical and emotional changes that prepare them
for adulthood. By teaching children about the
wonderful ways they are maturing, adults can
promote a positive attitude toward sexuality that
helps children grow into healthy, responsible
adults. Children who have talked to their parents
and other trusted adults are more likely to
understand the changes they are going through and
are able to avoid risky behavior. Too many young
people get involved in premature sexual activity
that can result in serious problems, such as
heartbreak, sexually transmitted disease, HIV
infection, or pregnancy.
8- As your partners in education, our District has
approved a series of lessons called the Michigan
Model Family Life as an embedded part of our
HPELW curriculum in grades - 4-9. The lessons were endorsed by the Tennessee
Department of Education and will be taught in
your childs HPELW classes beginning mid
November. The main focus of these lessons is
two-fold - Promote appreciation and respect for the amazing
changes experienced by self and others. - 2. Equip children with the skills they need to
postpone sexual intercourse. - Your child will be encouraged to talk to you
about growing up and to ask you questions.
Interviews with a parent or another trusted adult
will be assigned as homework in order to promote
open communication. - Keep in mind that Memphis City Schools values
parental choice. You can Opt-Out to have your
child EXCLUDED from participation. Please submit
in writing the Opt- Out form for your child
and return it to the school. Failure to submit
the Opt-Out form will result in your child
participating in the Michigan Model Family Life
curriculum lessons. - Sincerely,
- (Principal)
- (Teacher)

6 Dear Parents/Guardians Family Life
instruction is mandated by Tennessee Law, (Public
Chapter 565 dated May 25, 1989 amended August
2012), and has been implemented in Shelby County
Schools since 1991. The Family Life Curriculum
will be taught in your childs classroom during
the week of April 29 May 3, 2013. The 6th
Grade Curriculum consists of locally prepared
age appropriate lesson plans designed to teach
concepts about the family, friendship, and
responsibility. The school counselor presents
one lesson to 6th graders separated by gender.
Lessons in the Family Life Curriculum were
carefully evaluated by the staff and shared with
the community before receiving board approval in
1991 and revised, July 2009. Copies of the
guides are available for your review in the
public libraries, SCS school libraries, and
online http//www.scsk12.org/SCS/curriculum_guide
s/Family-Life-6-8/index.html. Parents/Guardians
who object to their childs participation in
this program have the option of requesting that
their child be exempted from this instruction by
written request to the principal. Your childs
grades will not be affected by this exemption
however, an alternate assignment will be
given. As always, we appreciate your assistance
and support of our instructional
programming. Sincerely, cc Principals
