• Welcome to this presentation, describing the new
  Geography GCSE Course at The British School Muscat

Unit Information

• The Geography GCSE level is designed to
  develop a range of relevant skills and knowledge
  from students study of Geography during Key
  Stage 3.
• It will introduce them to new skills, new places
  and new ideas. It will also allow students to
  apply what they are learning and understand more
  about how peoples decisions shape the world in
  which we live.
• This makes it relevant, stimulating and
  interesting. It offers many opportunities to
  develop ICT and all aspects of the six Key
  Skills.

What is involved?

• The course is made up of a series of core units
  that cover the themes of physical and human
  Geography while the option units look at
  interrelationships between people and the
  environment which give a broad and balanced
  overview of the subject.
• A variety of teaching methods are used including
  discussions of topical issues, debates,
  simulations, videos, fieldwork as well as more
  traditional methods.

  characteristics. Squatter Settlements.
  Sustainable cities.
• C. Tourism Management of growth in tourism, Mass
  tourism, Tourism in extreme environments,
  Sustainable tourism.
• Unit 3 - Local Fieldwork investigation.

Fieldwork Investigation.

• AQA sets a topic to investigate.
• Students go on a field trip, usually
  November/December of Year 11 to collect data.
• Students write up the investigation during class
  time.

Fieldwork

• Fieldwork forms an integral part of the course
  and this will continue to be run by the
  department.
• We currently investigate the impact of human
  activity at Bandar Jissah.

• Final Examinations
• Unit 1 Physical Geography.
• 90minutes (37.5 of final grade) End of Year 10

• 90 minutes (37.5 of final grade)-

FAQ will I pass?

• Geography is and has been one of the very
  highest achieving subjects since 2005. In 2009
• 27 students achieved a grade A or A at GCSE (
  two out of three students)
• 97.5 A - C at GCSE pass rate one of the highest
  at BSM
• At A level 67 achieved an A at AS (Yr 12)
• Most students achieve higher grades than
  predicted, regularly on average, over one grade
  per student above expectations!

What Could I do next with A level Geography?

• An GCSE Level in Geography is a stepping-stone
  to a whole range of future opportunities. A good
  grade will help you move onto a whole range of A
  level courses.
• Alternatively, employment opportunities where
  your Geographical skills will be particularly
  valued include journalism and the media, law,
  engineering, business management, ICT,
  environmental management, teaching, economic
  planning, marketing, leisure,disaster management
  recreation and tourism.
