Introduction
  • Definition of civic education.
  • A subject that creates awareness to the pupils on
    civic matters i.e. politics, governance, human
    rights etc.

WHY WAS IT INTRODUCED AT HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL?
  • Because of
  • Gap that existed between Grade 9 and college or
    university level.
  • Developing a sense of responsibility among the
    citizenry.
  • Equipping learners with knowledge, skills, and
    values.

Gap that existed between Grade 9 and college or
university level.
  • This gap has had an impact on Grade 12 school
    leavers who in most cases have graduated with
    little or no experience with regards to their
    roles, rights, and obligations.

Developing a sense of responsibility among the
citizenry.
  • It will help the pupils to became responsible
  • Such is participating in public issues like
    voting
  • Thus avoiding apathy, an enemy to democracy

1.THE CONSTITUTION.
  • DEFINITION
  • Fundamental law that society uses to organise its
    government.

FUNCTIONS OF THE CONSTITUTION IN THE POLITICAL
SYSTEM.
  • Establishes the government structure.
  • Distributes power among the three organs of
    government.
  • Imposes limits on the use of these powers.
  • Protects human rights of citizens.
  • Used by citizens to judge their governments
    observance of human rights.
  • States which positions in government are to be
    filled in through elections or appointments.

  • Written constitution
  • Unwritten constitution

WRITTEN CONSTITUTION
  • Definition
  • A Constitution that is documented written in a
    book form
  • a good example is the Zambian constitution

UNWRITTEN CONSTITUTION
  • Definition
  • A constitution that is not documented based on
    the customs and traditions of people
  • A good example is the British constitution.
