15Message Flow to the Handheld
- New Message arrives on the Exchange server.
- The BES maintains a MAPI connection to the users
mailbox and detects new message arrival. - Messages filters are applied on the BES to decide
whether the message should be forwarded. - A random message ID (RefId) and tag are assigned
to the message. - The message is compressed and encrypted.
- The message is sent to the wireless network
through port 3101. - The message arrives on the handheld. It is
decompressed and unencrypted. - The handheld then sends confirmation of receipt
back to the BES.
Forward? Compress Encrypted
16Message Flow from the Handheld
- A user sends a message from the handheld with a
RefID is assigned. - The message is compressed and encrypted.
- It is sent over GPRS to the BES Server.
- The message is decrypted and decompressed. If the
message cannot be decrypted using the users key
then the message is discarded. - The message is placed in the user outbox. If this
is a forwarded email or a reply then the RefID is
used to locate and append the original message. - Exchange delivers the message.
- A copy is saved in the users Sent items unless
the user specifies otherwise through desktop
manager.
Decompress Decrypted
17E mail delivery
- E mails delivered to the BlackBerry device are
compressed and broken down into 1.5 KB chunks. - Customer will view the first part of the e mail
and then request the next section by selecting
the more option. - Maximum e mail size of 32KB e.g. any mails larger
then this will be part delivered to the
BlackBerry device. This is true for attachments
as well.
18E mail delivery
- If the device is out of coverage, RIM will
deliver as soon as signal restored. - RIM Infer structure will only store 5 messages
per device if the user is out of coverage. - Once 5 messages have been received the relay will
inform the BES not to send out any further
messages. - Messages are stored on the RIM Infer structure
for 7 days and then deleted however the
messages stay on the customers Exchange server. - Filters can be set by the end user e.g. if they
are on holiday so that no messages are pushed out
to the BlackBerry device.
