Parent Portal

• All parents have access to the Parent Portal.
• Call Health Office 382-2925 at SHS West.
• Call Main Office 382-2700 at SHS East.
• Parents can request to receive daily bulletin,
  daily attendance, historical grades, scheduling
  information and teacher contact information.

Co-Curricular Clubs and Sports

• Why encourage students to join clubs or play a
  sport?
• Meet new people and explore new areas.
• Write on job applications.
• Write on college applications.
• Improve time management skills.
• Productive use of free time.
• Maintain connection to the high school community.

Working Papers

• Pick up application in offices below
• SHS West Attendance Office
• SHS East Main Office
• Bring to health office for nurses signature on
  physical fitness certification section.
• Pick up working card 2 -3 days later.
• Keep original working card give copy to
  employer.

• Opportunities begin at local organizations such
  as hospitals, religious affiliations, Big
  Brothers/Big Sisters, town hall, nursing homes.
• Begin commitment in 9th grade and stay with the
  organization for 4 years. Each year take on new
  responsibilities within the organization to show
  growth and leadership skills.
• Devote volunteer time to one or two organizations
  rather than multiple organizations.
• Keep a list of all extra curricular/volunteer
  activities beginning in grade 9.

Other Honor Societies

Advanced Placement Exams

• 37 courses and exams across 22 subject areas
• Exams are scored from 1 5
• Registration takes place with classroom teacher.
• Taken in early May.
• Each exam is approx. 3 hours in length.

Why Take AP Exams

• Gain the edge in college preparation.
• Improve writing skills and problem solving
  techniques.
• Develop study habits for rigorous coursework at
  the college level.
• Demonstrate maturity and readiness for college.
• Study subjects in greater detail.
• Earn college credits or advanced standing at most
  of the nations colleges and universities.

PLAN AHEAD!!!

• Plan to take AP exams in May generally taken in
  10th, 11th and 12th grade.
• Plan to take PSAT October of junior year.
• Plan to take the SAT Reasoning Test and ACT in
  the spring semester of the junior year.
• Consider taking SAT Subject Tests after the
  completion of Honors and AP courses.
• Retake exams, if necessary, in the beginning of
  the senior year.

Students with Disabilities

• CollegeBoard and ACT require a separate
  application for testing accommodations for
  students with disabilities.
• CollegeBoard application is called SSD and is
  completed by students primary teacher as early
  as 9th grade.
• ACT application is called ACT Extended Time
  National Testing and ACT Special Testing and is
  completed when the student registers for the ACT
  test in their junior year.
• Testing accommodations from CollegeBoard and ACT
  are not guaranteed. Testing company determines
  eligibility.
