Title: Project Timeline

1
Project Home Automation
2
Project Components
  • Embedded
  • Input from two sensors (temperature, proximity,
    motion, pressure, light, etc.)
  • Output to display (LCD, LED, 7-segment) or
    actuator (motor)
  • Microcontroller program on Arduino
  • Zigbee for communication between Arduinos?
  • Mobile
  • Android application
  • Wireless communication (over Internet) with
    embedded part of system

3
Architecture
4
Project Timeline
  • Form group of two students by today!
  • Get started on serial communication part today
  • Choose project components by next Wednesday
  • First demo June 10
  • Second demo June 19
  • Final demo last day of class (June 26)

5
Project Requirements
  • Your system will have 10 functional requirements
    and four non-functional requirements
  • Groups of 3 will likely have more requirements
  • Once youve decided on the components youd like
to use, please discuss the requirements with a
    member of the instruction staff
  • Changes to the requirements must be approved by
    the instructor

6
Limitations/Restrictions
  • As far as I know, we cannot give static IP
addresses to wireless devices at Penn
  • This means that to communicate over the internet,
your embedded component may have to be wired,
    either
  • to an ethernet connection
  • via serial/USB to a wireless device, e.g. a
    laptop or a mobile phone

7
Arduino
  • Simple microcontroller and OS
  • Programming language very similar to Java
  • Lots of online examples (http//arduino.cc)
  • Lots of add-on components
  • simple sensors and displays
  • Arduino-to-Arduino wireless networking
  • analog input/output
