Title: ECE 283 Digital Communication Systems

1
ECE 283 Digital Communication Systems
  • Course Description
  • Digital modulation techniques. Coding theory.
    Transmission over bandwidth constrained channels.
Signal fading and multipath effects. Spread
    spectrum. Optical transmission techniques.
    Prerequisite Electrical Engineering 281 or
consent of instructor. Instructor Brooke. 3
    units.
  • Text Digital Communications Fourth Edition,
    John G. Proakis, McGraw Hill

2
Grading
  • The course will be graded based on reports from
several experiment versus theory mini projects
using Matlab for the experimental portion

3
Project Titles
  • Project 1 (start in week 3)
  • Probability of Error and/or maximum data rate for
    Optimal Receivers and QAM modulation
  • Project 2 (start in week 6)
  • Effect of Error Correction codes on Probability
    of Error for baseband communication
  • Project 3 (start in week 9)
  • Effect of Equalization on Probability of Error
    for baseband communication
  • There will be an opportunity for students to
suggest modifications or refinements to the
projects to match their interests and backgrounds.
