HISTORY OF MSDS
  • In 1800s, chemists began recording safety
    precautions to provide to customers.
  • Public Health Service made MSDS available to the
    public in the early 1900s.

  • Manufacturing Chemists Association
  • Made Chemical Safety Data Sheets in 1940
  • Contained Information for Safe Handling and Use
    of hazardous chemicals
  • OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health
    Administration)
  • In November 1983, OSHA published Hazard
    Communication Standard.
  • November 1985, manufacturers and distributors are
    REQUIRED to provide MSDS to their customers.
  • EPA
  • Released "Emergency Planning and Community
    Right-To-Know Act"
  • use of MSDS is an important part of this.

  • In Canada, every material that is controlled by
    WHMIS must have an accompanying MSDS specific to
    that individual product or material
  • Under WHMIS law, an MSDS for a controlled product
    must NOT be more than three years old
  • Countries maintain and regulate their own system
    of MSDS labels

    manufacturer and suppliers names, addresses, and
    emergency phone numbers

  • Preparation Information who is responsible for
    preparation and date of preparation of MSDS
