New Years Day
12
  • In England the New Year is not as widely or as
    enthusiastically marked as Christmas. In
Trafalgar Square there is also a big crowd and
someone usually falls into the fountain.

13
St Valentines Day
14
  • February 14th . Valentines Day has been a day
for lovers since ancient times. At this time of
the year valentines it is traditional for
young people to send cards and presents with red
hearts on them to one another.
  • People usually do not sign these cards and a
lot of time is spent trying to guess who has sent
    them.

15
Easter
16
  • Easter is a religious holiday, and Easter
Monday is a bank holiday. Certain old traditions
are observed, whether it is celebrate as the
start of spring or a religious festival.
  • London greets the spring with a truly
spectacular Easter Parade. The British celebrate
the idea of new birth by giving each other
chocolate Easter eggs which are opened and eaten
on Easter Sunday. On Good Friday bakers sell hot
cross buns, which are toasted and eaten with
    butter.

17
Queens Birthday
18
The queen turned in April, but tradition holds
that "Trooping the Colour" - the public party for
the monarch's birthday is held in June when the
weather is better. The custom dates from 1748,
and every year's parade was held in bright
sunshine. The parade featured more than 1,100
soldiers, including the famous Foot Guards, who
wear bright red coats and bearskin hats.

19
May Day
20
  • May 1st was an important day in Middle Ages. In
the very early morning, young girls went to the
fields and washed their faces with dew. They
believed this made them very beautiful for a year
after that. Also on May Day the young men of
each village tried to win prizes with their bows
and arrows, and people dance round the maypole.
  • Many English-villages still have a maypole,
and on May 1st , the villagers dance round it.
You can see one in the picture below.

21
Halloween
22
  • On 31st October the British celebrate
Halloween. The word is a corruption of All
Hallows Eve. It refers to the fact that this day
comes before 1st November the religious feast
    of all Saints.

23
Christmas
24
  • Christmas Day, December 25th , is probably the
most exciting for most British families. On the
Sunday before Christmas many churches hold a
carol service where special hymns are sung as it
is the Christian celebration of the birth of
Christ. Sometimes carol-singers can be heard on
the streets as they collect money for charity.
Most families decorate their houses with
brightly-colored paper and holly, and they
    usually decorate a Christmas tree.

25
Boxing Day
26
  • December 26th is called Boxing Day because this
was the day for giving Christmas presents (in
boxes) to the milkman and postman. Today, people
still give a Christmas box to postmen,
milkmen, servants, dustmen, and tradesmen it is
    usually some money.
