Compound sentences
2
Compound sentences
  • Compound sentences contain two or more connected
    simple sentences.
  • Shaunta wanted a radio for her birthday.
  • She got two.

3
Combining simple sentences
  • To create a compound sentence you can link the
two by using a conjunction .
  • And, but, yet, or, nor, for, so
  • Shaunta wanted a radio for her birthday and she
    got two!

4
When combining simple sentences,
  • When you use a conjunction to combine two related
sentences, the comma comes before the conjunction
    in the newly formed sentence.

5
However.
  • Compound sentences usually have two subject-verb
sets and each sentence expresses a complete
    thought.
  • If one part of the compound sentence does not
express a complete thought, then you do not use a
    comma before the conjunction.

6
Look at these sentences
  • James bought flowers but forgot to give them to
    Sylvia.
  • James bought flowers, but he forgot to give them
    to Sylvia.

7
This sentence is correct!
  • James bought flowers but forgot to give them to
    Sylvia.
  • In this compound sentence, there is no second
subject. Therefore, you do not use a comma before
    the but.

8
This sentence is also correct!
  • James bought flowers, but he forgot to give them
    to Sylvia.
  • In this compound sentence, there is a second
subject (he). Therefore, you do use a comma
    before the but.

9
Reminder!
  • Commas are used in compound
  • sentences when there are two
  • subject-verb sets.
