Tracking
28
Information Management
Information Display
  • Charts for plan, prep, execute, post battle
  • Identify the CRITICAL information
  • Determine display means
  • Clear, concise, complete, visible
  • Minimize chart clutter
  • Routine versus mission specific
  • Mini charts in notebook for movement
  • Use in garrison for training
  • AAR your system

29
Information Management
Message Handling
  • Identify how specific types of messages
  • and information must be processed
  • Determine who conducts the action required
  • Practice, practice, practice battle drill
  • Pre-printed, multi-copy message forms
  • Keep TOC noise to a minimum

  • Empower NCOs to manage the flow of information
    in the TOC
  • Have a plan to handle message flowand rehearse
    it
  • Use preprinted message forms that produce
    multiple copies

31
Information Management
Battle Tracking
  • Identify and prioritize critical information
  • Develop a system - chart, sketch, matrix
  • Understand and enforce the system
  • Everyone plays a role
  • Information versus journal management
  • Standardized map boards
  • Which system will be our COP? (CPOF/MCS)

32
TOC Layout
Form follows function. - Frank Lloyd Wright
33
TOC Layout
Effective common factors...
  • High degree of organization
  • Tailored to unit requirements
  • Do not segregate staff sections
  • Do segregate plans from operations

34
TOC Layout
Designing your TOC
  • Driven by actions associated with
  • duties and responsibilities
  • Centrally locate XO and Battle Captain
  • Traffic control plan
  • Storage plan / packing lists
  • Message traffic / information flow
  • Separate area / tent for plans / briefings
  • Plan for different TOC configurations

Successful CSS
  • ANTICIPATES
  • CDRs directives
  • Companys needs
  • MDMP logistics estimate
  • Look at it from units perspective what would
you need to accomplish your mission?
  • IS CONTINUOUS
  • Reports are essential
  • Improvise as necessary, but then add to your SOP
  • SOP (Regen Point, Casualties, Base Defense)

Do we know what we have on-hand?
  • IS INTEGRATED
  • Platoon through brigade
  • Must support the operational plan
  • Poor plan CSS reactive instead of proactive

Are companies accurately reporting OH quantities
( needs) on LOGSTATs?
Are we sending an accurate LOGSTAT to Bde?
Are we conducting a LOG Meeting to consolidate
status requirements? Does it cover maintenance,
classes of supply, medical needs, and other
resource needs for the mission/training?
  • IS RESPONSIVE
  • CSS Team ALWAYS available to companies, BN, and
    Higher HQ
  • LOGSTAT / PERSTAT reports

Do we have aggressive representation and
coordination with BCT BSB to get what we need?

CCIR
  • Applicable only to the commander that specifies
    it
  • Directly linked to present and future tactical
    situation
  • Situation-dependent
  • Events or activities that are predictable
  • Specified by the commander for each operation
  • Time-sensitive information that must be
immediately reported to the commander, staff, and
    subordinate commanders
  • Always included in an OPORD or OPLAN
  • Transmitted by a communications system specified
    in the SOP

52
PIR / EEFI / FFIR
  • Priority intelligence requirements are those
intelligence requirements for which a commander
has an anticipated and stated priority in his
task of planning and decision making.
  • Essential elements of friendly information are
the critical aspects of a friendly operation
that, if known by the enemy, would subsequently
compromise, lead to failure, or limit the success
of the operation, and therefore must be protected
    from enemy detection
  • Friendly force information requirements are
information that the commander and staff need
about the forces available for the operation.
